The quote from HTC:

“…if your phone was launched this year, we will most likely offer an upgrade for it to the Froyo version. This includes popular models like the Desire and Droid Incredible as well as hotly anticipated phones like the Evo 4G, MyTouch slide and upcoming models. We will announce a full list of phones and dates once we are closer to launching the upgrades. We are working closely with Google and our other partners to ensure we have the earliest access to everything we need to provide a complete and solid Sense experience on Froyo. We expect to release all updates in the second half of this year but can’t be more specific yet.”

I'm very disappointed because Froyo finally adds Voice Dialing via Bluetooth and native APPS 2 SD and APPS back to Phone....

Oh well lesson learned. I should have waited to jump into Android when all of the features I wanted were implemented. HTC could learn from Nokia. My E71 just got a firmware update to 410.21.10. Nokia takes care of their phones, even the older ones.

+1 to Nokia, I just wish they made Android phones.

Legend is not in this announcement?

It will come after the Desire and Incredible.

I see they mention the mytouch slide. Since we've already got ports from the slide, we should see 2.2 on the hero yet! Shame it won't be official, but at least we won't have to wait another 6 months.

A few years ago I paid £2000 for a PC. It was top of the range and would run anything I threw at it - the latest 3D games, intensive video processing, etc... I binned it a few years ago as I couldn't even install the latest version of Windows on it.

My point is, when I buy ANY tech device/gadget, I don't expect it to last forever. I never expected my HTC Hero to be updated to the latest version of Android every time there was a new release, if only for the fact that the hardware wouldn't be up to running the newer updates. The fact that 2.1 is coming to my handset, albeit later than expected, is a positive.

I guarantee that the N1, Desire, Evo4G et al won't be able to run every version of Android released from now on!

I do expect a phone that was released in 2009 to be able to run an OS released in 2010 though. That's a massive difference. Seeing that Apple has set a precedent with their phones and updating them for three years (I think that is the right time frame, correct me if I am wrong), HTC should at least manage to carry their phones for 2 years just to give the consumer a little bit of trust in the Android platform.

Also, I have successfully installed Windows 7 on a PC from 2002.

I don't like it, but the point here is that I don't have an iPhone 'cause I can flash my Hero to any ROM I choose.

Ergo, I will update it to 2.2 when a port is available (and it surely will be. also, ROMs will exist for Hero for as long as the hardware will allow it).

Who really cares if it actually is official or not?

I think you're right but ultimately the lesson to be learnt from being a Hero owner is that if you're at all bothered about this stuff, get the Google Experience phone of the day.

I think it's reasonable for HTC to not be making an unending series of firmware updates for their hardware but I think they're releasing so many handsets with so little to differentiate them (Legend Vs Hero or Hero Vs Magic or Desire Vs Evo for example) that the forced obsolescence of phones is coming around ridiculously quickly. If contract lengths were all still a year or if the handsets didn't lose so much of their value so quickly it might not be a big deal but alas, it feels like it is a big deal.

On another forum I use the Android thread is full of Desire owners, new to Android, asking when they're going to get their update to 2.2, If the Hero is anything to go by it'll be 2011 - you have to wonder if Sense is worth it. I don't think it is, I'd much rather see the performance boost the Nexus is enjoying rather than HTC's wonderful clock/weather widget.

Google Experience next time, for sure.

Fingers crossed.

I've never put a non Modaco Rom on but when I read about them I see people saying "Amazing! Hardly any FC's!"

Sounds a bit rubbish. Is that to be expected?

I believe it will be with the Desire update because the Desire and the Legend are phones of the same generation...

My personal opinion is the Desire owners will get 2.2 but depending on how fast the sucessor will be there either by august or by december maybe january. It really depends on whether HTC has the next one in line or not.

I personally have learned my lesson for me it is the google branded phone of the day from now on, no matter how superior the next Samsung/Sony/HTC phone is in the line, software counts more than hardware to me.

One direct customer HTC now has lost and probably a load more will follow.

Here's the problem I have with this…These companies are conditioning the consumer into thinking like you (with all due respect). At some point in the near future these products will become just like the disposable cameras that were sold in the past. Now we pay recycle fees in the U.S. when we purchase electronics because of the accelerated obsolescence of electronics.

In the U.S. people commit to 2 year agreements (I know by choice) to own a phone. It’s not unreasonable to expect that phone get proper updates within that time period. If we continue to accept 6 month obsolescence (an exaggeration I know) then that’s what we’ll get.

I agree with Mansn, I don’t expect a computer built to run Windows NT to run Windows 7. I also don’t expect a phone built an 2009 not be able to run an OS released in 2010.

I don’t need new features. I just want features that should have been included in the first place. How about a better signal, Bluetooth Voice Dialing, better battery life, etc. How about all of this without the need for Chefs to optimize the ROM? The consumer actually has the power but they don’t realize it because “I don’t expect it to last forever”. This is how we’re being conditioned however. How about having the phone last just two years and updated as needed?

Why should the solution be, "buy another phone" if you want next years OS release? If the Hero can run 2.1 it can run 2.2, 2.3, 2.4. I actually don't expect it to be able to run 3.0. Just like Apple and that stupid iPhone, the older phone can run 4.0 but Apple won't release it. Nokia is still updating my almost 2 year old E71 with newer firmware’s and free navigation. HTC can do the same for the Hero but they choose not to and we just accept it. It's flat out wrong.

I don't expect HTC to make an unending stream of OS updates. However, I do expect them to make some, and they haven't even made one yet. Further, this phone model is 10 months old. They're all still under warranty, never mind making any kind of commitment to extended OS update support.

No offence but are you trying to counter something I've said or argue with me? You're effectively replying to me with the point I made.

What exactly did this Firmware update give you? Any new features? I doubt it, proberly just a secruity update or something, (Could be wrong though

I wouldnt be worried anyway, theres almost a fully working 2.2 update for the G1, so Im sure the Hero will get something similar in due time :D

I got my HTC Hero on a 2 year contract with Orange UK. When I chose that handset, I did quite a bit of research and knew its features and its limitations. If HTC never release an update for this phone, I'll still be happy - it does exactly what they claimed when I bought it, plus I can customise it to the nth degree by installing whatever apps I like. If/when it gets the 2.1 update, that'll be a bonus for me.

Every phone I've had prior to this one has been on an 18 month contract and I've never been able to update any of them with a new OS. This is by far the best handset I've ever owned, and that is due to the Android 1.5 Cupcake OS.

Amen. I don't understand all the "I'm never buying HTC again for this!" comments; HTC delivered a phone (which I love) and shock/horror aren't going to be spending money on R&D to support it, now that newer, more powerful ones are available.

I think it's more the repeated rumours and dates being pushed back that people are pissed off about - some bought the phone thinking it'd be upgraded in a timely manner, but this hasn't turned out to be the case.

This update allowed me to have free turn by turn navigation. Other updates fixed the camera and things like that. I don't care about new features just fix what's not up to standards, that's all I'm asking for. OK don't give me Froyo (don't really care) but how about improving the signal, battery life, add Bluetooth voice dialing for hands free use as required by law, even dumb phones can do that. Why is this so unreasonable to people here? I don't get it. The Bluetooth issue alone has been requested since Nov 2008 all the way from G1 to Droid users.

You've obviously never owned an iPhone. Even my company Blackberry gets updates to fix problems. I just updated it a month ago from AT&T no less (and they suck). I had the original Samsung Instinct from Samsung/Sprint (prior to buying the Hero) and even that phone got upgrades/updates. I don't need live wallpaper and more eye candy (no Froyo so what). Just fix the phones flaws (they know where the flaws are), that's all I'm asking for.

Businesses have condition us into tiered everything. All the way from different iterations of the same television to $60 - $100 video games. You're just accepting this as the norm (like everyone) and maybe it shouldn't be like this. That's all I'm saying. Where does it end? You know the squeaky wheel gets the oil.
