Telstra (AUS) HTC Desire - What are my options?

Hello,

I just bought a HTC Desire from Telstra, upgrading from an ADP1, and found it packed full of bloatware.

I was wondering what the current flashing options were / if anyone has some success stories.

My main goal is to start with a clean android installation, with or without Sense UI I don't really care, and making room for an upgrade to 2.2 soon when a working rom is available.

What is the best way to go about this?

Version details:

- HTC Desire A8183

- 0.75.xxxx boot loader (HBOOT?).

- 1.16.841.1 software

- 2.1-update1 firmware

Thanks in advance, sorry for the newbie question.

I just got my A8183 yesterday, rooted it, applied MCR r3, and now I am a very happy Desire user.

My A8183 came with the same hbbot/software versions as yours.

To root it, I follow the guide here:

http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-desi...o-1-21-support/

I think there is a typo in the guide though:

ONLY if the above download is suitable - if you have a bootloader version 0.80.xxxx or below AND a current ROM of 1.21.xxx.x or below - DOWNLOAD (MediaFire) / MIRROR (ROMraid / CoBlitz) - MD5: 51565351b3c03c20242ec946c4af6bbc

I guess Paul means "ONLY if the above download is NOT suitable". Anyway I downloaded that one and it worked.

Since this procedure gives you the ability to get into the recovery, you should be able to flash any compatible rom you like in the future (don't apply the official .exe updates though, as they will remove your root and possibily upgrade your hboot making it harder or even impossible to root again)

Awesome, thanks for the response! So no issues?

Does the FM Radio work (the image mentions it not working for some reason)?

Did you read up on the USB flashing issue (bricking phones) / or just risk it? I'm pretty willing to risk it, the phone doesn't really feel like "mine" with a crazy amount of irremovable Telstra apps.

Before you root it, however, you can help us fix a problem that all Aussie Desire users have been having, by giving us a file out of your Telstra ROM.

Thing is, when it's rooted, the device reports as an A8181.

Since Telstra hardware lock BigPond Android Services to the A8183 only, Rooting locks NextG owners out of the really important stuff like our data usage meter, and less important stuff like Mobile Foxtel and the Telstra App store (and seriously, telstra, charging 7 bucks for a game that's available for 2 bucks on the Aussie market? for shame!)

But anyway, since you haven't rooted your YET, could you help us out and pull a file out of your Telstra ROM for us? this can fix the problem.

Hook up your phone to your PC with the USB cable, and using the ADB tool (which is supplied in the rooting instruction guide (use r4-desire-ALT for Telstra A8183s!), and run this command:

adb pull /system/build.prop

Then put the resulting file online for us. We can then really easily mod the existing custom ROM (MCR r3) with the stock build.prop, allowing the device to report the correct name and fixing the bug for future users

FM Radio works perfectly, and the USB problem isn't an issue if you follow the instructions carefully, and use the correct tools.

MCR r3 also includes the GPS Fix. (but as in my previous post, locks you out of Bigpond services until we can get that issue resolved)

Will do, having a bit of trouble getting adb talking to the phone at the moment (running Ubuntu 10.04), have a feeling it's just a udev issue. But soon as that's sorted I'll put the file up somewhere

It was a udev issue in case anyone is interested, needed to follow the developer device guide changing udev settings, here.

I've grabbed the file and dumped it on my hosting, here.

Is this something that you will be updating post flashing / rooting? Or should I change the way I flash the phone to use this file?
