PocketSNES and Lemmings

Hello

I have been trying to mess around with the source code for these two games, having realised it is way over my head I have posted the source code for someone else to have a go (the code to both are win ce, I think). Lemmings I managed to compile for smartphone, but just kind of locked the phone.

PocketSnes started up and displays the main screen, but then errors due to lack of memory.

I have put both in the file section of the yahoo group at

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/smartphoneapps/

Hopefully someone who knows what they are doing can have a go.

cheers

Do I need to sign up to retrieve the code?

I don't want to join another group, I spend enough time on this one as it is!

You can NEVER spend enough time on this forum,

Trust me ;)

Please don't port Lemmings to the SPV.....

I would never get my better half off my SPV ;)

Oooooh yes..... Bring on Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country and MARIO KART!!! ;)  :D :D :(

I cant wait for someone to crack this puppy and post it up here...

Just imagine the views and replies to such a thread like this would have:

SNES_SPV Emulator now available to all...[bETA]

Server would be stressed to the max on Modaco!:(

Server is probably stressed to the max from people downloading yor signature, no?

Is it really feasable to expect SNES to be emulated on a MOBILE PHONE good as it would be? I mean how long ago did snes come out? about 10 years? 10 years and youve gone from having a massive box into whish you stick a cartridge the size of your (small) hand and another massive box that displays the images (the tv), to all that being on your PHONE??? It sounds insane.

I mean go ahead and try because if you manage you'll be the person who makes science fiction of 10 years ago come true!

from what i've seen of the pocketpc version then it would not be perfect, some games run well whilst others run very slowly. I am still in awe that my phone can emulate any console at the moment, to really get the most of what the phone can do games need to be developed for the actual operating system itself (ie. Motocross Stuntracer). Emulation is never a particularly effiecient way to run a game, but still is quite impressive to show people.

hopefully the guy who did some work on it will get a working version available.

I tried PocketSnes and got it working by making a few modifications in the source code...

However, it is bloody slow, the screen doesn't fit on our little machine ! I will images tonight of Micromachines 2 which looks brilliant !!!

Or if someone can host me a few jpeg files, I'll send it to him... I cant get to my ftp site from work !

Actually mate the Signature would NOT stress the modaco server as its on MY web server so the bandwidth comes from me! copiche? :)

So then using your statement then i guess Doom is a complete figment of your imagination because how could it be possible to emulate an old PC running this software that uses components similar in size PC's of today.

And what about the NES emualtor availabe and the Lucas Arts emulator for SPV? Surley this also contradicts with your post so i will just end my rant as i think i have made my point. ;)

A SNES port is possible (as zizione has made this quite clear) but it will take some work but if there is a will and someone clever enough to do it it will be a reality.

It still slows the pages down for 56k users though. Nevermind i'm sure you dont care.

And maybe you misinterpretted my post. I am all for the developement of a snes emulator. What I was really saying was how good it would be if someone cleverer than me could manage to do it.

I've taken a quick look at lemmings. It's very simple, but all based on the user taping on the pocket pc screen. I can't think of an easy way to reproduce that, expect from moving a cursor on the screen and pressing down an action button.

This will be a pain for users.

Any other ideas ???

Playing Lemmings with a keypad is pain in the ass (even if it should be possible)!

I agree. Porting Lemmings seems a bad idea to me, it is one of those games that require the speed of a mouse too much.

I think I saw a gameboy version as I was looking around the web. Probably best to get that and play it through Gnuboy if you must have a lemmings game.

Cheers

I can't tell you what its like.

DJ Watts, you seem a little confused as to the difference between porting pc code for an actual piece of software and an emulator. An emulator simply does the operations of the original consoles processors through software, this is why the roms do not need altering between systems as they are in practice running on the same set up as they were originaly made for (although the emulator software is converting the operations to ones that smartphone understands). This is why emulators for more sophisticated machines will be slow running on our tiny little machines, even on a 400mhz pocketpc the snes emulator still runs many games slowly. Where as software like doom has had the source code for the actual game altered, the game is converted to a form of c++ that the phone can understand directly, therefore running far better. Even better again is software that is written directly for the operating system, ie games by jimmy software, handango, etc... this will be far quicker as it is designed for this platform.

In my opinion the snes emulator will never run at full speed, perhaps a version specifically written for smartphone would run a little better, but i think any speed of emulation would still be impressive. Master system may be possible though, that would be quite cool.

Hope this cleared things up a little, (please anybody correct any information i may have got wrong).

A snes emulator is undoubtable possible even running at full speed, if it runs on pocketpc itll run on smartphone. The pocket pc version would be slow and might require some modification to run on smartphone but if someone made a snes emulator from the ground up using smartphone arm asm itd probably run at full speed, no one is going todo that tho!

Extreme_biker0: you obviously have absolutly no idea as to the speed of progress where have you been for the last 10 years? Its really not that impressive dont get me wrong i love my smartphone but i knew this was going to happen. How comes you don't understand a snes emulator is a possiblity when this phone plays movies which i find far more impressive, 10 years ago that WAS science fiction, the only way to watch a movie was on VHS/Cinema/TV not even laptops couldnt play decent movies!

The snes wasn't even a very impressive piece of hardware, i mean it required a SuperFX chip to run doom, doom is running around at a nice speed on my little smartphone without any modification!

Has anyone seen the theoretical progress/time chart, its almost vertical now, meaning that we making ridiculious advances in technology, exciting times indeed!

ok well ive been working on this as i said before and we got nigel mansells f1 challenge,

however the speed problem did get alittle better, the phone would continually freeze which is why i lost my de-certificatin and had to unlock my phone again.

so a thought if u have it running without the phone freezing, then post your link let us download it with the edited source code, and we'll try it and see what changes some of us can make. i also think it can be done with atleast playable speeds.

so please post cause if you've found somthing we've missed perhaps we have somthing cause our screen fitted perfectly.

As mentioned above, has anyone looked at the feasibility of a master system II/Game Gear Emulator? To have Sonic and Road Rash would be genius, and as there's only three buttons and less hardware overhead than for a SNES I guess it's theoretically feasible. It's a question of whether theres a pocket PC version kicking around for somebody to port, no?
