UPDATED: 8183 Mod v2!

If you have a Telstra branded NextG Desire, Model A8183, you'll find that after rooting, The device reports as an A8181, which causes problems for users trying to access some Telstra services that use handset device ID locking.

This Modified version of Pauls' Desire MCR fixes this issue, by changing some Strings in the XML files that the phone uses to report Device IDs.

Note: This ROM should ONLY be used by users of Telstra-branded A8183s.

This Rom is otherwise Verbatim to Paul's Desire MCR r3, without additions.

Desire MCR r3 8183 Mod (Thanks to Paul)

Also included are the Kitchen Files, so you can include the 83 mod in the Online Kitchen:

Online Kitchen Files (Thanks to Wuttlebush)

Paul's given me permission to post it on Twitter. I'm uploading it now, as well as the changed files so that Paul can add it to the kitchen.

(Link will appear here once upload has completed)

Be forewarned, this is still a BETA, and may be unstable. it works on my phone, but I have no idea if it will work on yours.

Eyy, so the files worked? Is it possible to push the modified files to a current installation instead of reinstalling the whole firmware?

Which telstra services don't work? they all seem to work for me, bigpond mobile site, data usage, mobile foxtel. I had to edit my APN settings though.

Are you using the straight MCR? or did you mod it in the kitchen?

The primary bug is that when you root to MCR R3, The phone reports as an A181. What have you changed in the ROM to make it report correctly?

Default MCR r3 - it does report incorrectly but I haven't changed anything except APN settings. Using the default ones in the MCR gives me access denied to the telstra services. These are the ones im using:

Telstra Internet

APN: Telstra.wap

Proxy: 10.1.1.181

Port: 80

MMS Protocol: WAP 2.0

MCC: 505

MNC: 01

Auth Type: CHAP

Telstra MMS

APN: telstra.mms

MMSC: http://mmsc.telstra.com:8002

MMS Proxy: 10.1.1.180

MMS Port: 80

MMS Protocol: WAP 2.0

MCC: 505

MNC: 01

Auth Type: CHAP

APN Type: mms

Sadly, No. The files have to be placed in the zip file, and the file has to be signed. Apologies for the delay, I had to wait till my shaping lifted. It's uploading at a respectable speed now.

Here's the Custom ROM.

NOTE: This ROM should only be used on Telstra NextG Branded Desires, model A8183.

Modded MCR r3, No additions, Thanks to Paul

Kitchen files, thanks to Wuttlebush

Thanks Muskie, for posting the kitchen files and trying it out!

TBH, I'm surprised it isn't a change in the radio binary - that the OS itself can report its own version and affect the way the network treats it (HLR/UTRAN/anywhere else that matters) is interesting in itself. Nice that it just works - I'm going to rebrand mine the Jyu8183, see what explodes

I just edited my Telstra Internet APN to match sub27's and now my data usage works. (gave the access denied message before) MMS APN already had those settings. Haven't tried this new ROM since I don't think a model number is the sole cause of this problem. I've used plenty of phones Telstra have never offered for sale over the years without problems.

I don't use Mobile Foxtel or video on demand etc so I can't confirm those but the fact it does fix access to at least one of the services is a pretty good sign that access isn't based soley on the USER-AGENT string from the browser (if it ever did at all). Happy to try any other free services for troubleshooting provided I dont have to sign up to anything since I hate paying telstra anything more than I have to.

Telstra bought model 8183 desire.

Still using r2 MCR with additions.

Details:

Build number: 1.21.MCR.2 CLxxxxxx release-keys

Showing as model 8181.

I've cleaned up the code a bit more, and will be releasing v2 of the 83 fix ROM in a couple of hours (i'd do it now, but i'm shaped)

Should report correctly as an 83, and the UAString has been changed as well.

Does anyone have any requests they'd like to add re: system files? I can't include the Foxtel app for obvious reasons, but I'm happy to make the phone a bit more localised for australians. perhaps ading some aussie site default bookmarks to the browser or something?

Hey Paul, or any of the other mods, any chance of getting the Topic name changed to something like "Paul's MCR r3 Telstra NextG 8183 Mod" or something? or just something that's a little easier to understand? I'll admit that the topic name looks a bit cryptic, lol..

Thanks for your work. It doesn't work though. I've tried manually pushing the files using ADB and cooking a fresh R3 ROM with the kitchen zip file. Still reports as A8181.

I've checked all 3 updated config files and they have the 8183 references. Weird.....

Did you do a wipe?

Back up yer stuff, then go to recovery and do a Wipe/factory Reset, and Wipe the Dalvik-Cache, too. Then update with the new ROM.

Always recommended to wipe when doing something that messes with build.prop, etc.

Just notice that after installing this rom I only have 80mb of space left on the device. Other roms give me 140mb. Any reason for this.

Shouldn't be.. You sure? there's literally no difference form the R3 rom other than the build.pop and xmls..

I'll be redoing it for R3.1 tomorrow anyway..
