Editing ROMs

Hi,

A couple of days ago I got bored with how slow my pulse is and how many pointless apps there are, so set my self the task of creating my own custom ROM, based on the T-mobile style custom ROM released by Paul.

Basiclly what im doing is going through the ROM, deleting the .apks i dont want or need and adding in the ones i do. I have started with the browser, but need some help with some of the other files. My ultimate aim is to edit as much as i can in the ROM (I am a newb and dont want it to get to complicated) so that the ROM is as i want it with no extras that i dont need.

Other things I would like to change include the default background, The launcher and things like calenders and contacts.

Once i have done this i would like to be able to make a guide for others who want a ROM that just has what they want but dont have the confidence or knowledge to do anything to complicated.

Being the new to all of this i do not have enough experience to do this my self, and so and help and contributions to this project will be greatly appreciated . As the first thing i'm doing is sorting out the apps included please could someone tell me what .apk files i NEED to keep and what ones can be deleted or replaced. Also where can i get .apks?

I will add some more questions as i progress

Thanx

Aaron

i really have no idea for this sort of thing, but i can only suggest that you only delete apk's of files that you know do certain tasks. for instance if there was taskiller.apk u cud safely assume its for taskiller and so is safe to delete, but be careful if u delete something u shouldnt u may end up bricking ur phone.

sorry i couldnt be of more help

If I try to install a ROM ive edited and it wont boot shouldn't i be able to boot into recovery and restore a backup?

Also is the emulator that comes on the disk a pulse emulator or standard Android. If it is pulse could i try my ROM on that first?

Thanx

:S you lost me at emulator lol:)

as far as im aware you should be able to restore via nandroid if u end up screwing it up, that is providing you can get to the recovery thingy.

if not im sure just reapplying the december update should do the job?

I've added the Pure Grid Calendar Widget to my ROM. Does this mean i can delete the Calendar_B116SP01.apk as long as I keep the Calendar Provider?

Also, I've added HTC_IME. Can I Get rid of touch Pal and the default Android keyboard?

Thanx

I've managed to customise it a little more now. I was wondering. Is there a way I can access the files on my phone so I can get the .apks and things I want for the ROM I am making?

Thanx

You can use root explorer and copy the apps to your sd-card (system>sdcard) or you can pull the apps using adb (adb.exe pull app.apk my/windows/home/folder/app.apk)

You can delete touchpal but you can't delete the default keyboard cuz its not an apk

2 Questions

1. I am using the hungarian official update. How do I get root on it?

2. Once Ive moved files to the SD Card could I just enable USB and take them that way?

Im stripping out everything I dont need from this ROM. Does anyone know where I can find the live wallpapers and the widgets that are already on the phone? (like analog clock or my music etc)

Yup - Live Wallpapers (all of 'em) reside in system/app - there's LiveWallpapers.apk (and .odex, depending on which ROM you're editing) and LiveWallpapersPicker.apk. The other widgets are in there as well - MyBookmarks, MyCalendar etc. etc.

Other wallpapers (dead wallpapers?) live in media/hw_image/wallpaper - there's a normal jpg and a _small.jpg for each.

There seem to be several people working on the same project here - I've been trying to create a "Lite" ROM as well. Perhaps a new thread is called for?

Good idea. I was going to create a tutorial on how to delete everything you dont want and put in what you do so perhaps it go go in there?
