Flashing the Telstra Desire Discussion

Hey guys.

Ok, so I know there is a LOT of information about this floating around, as i've spent the last few days reading most of it. But a lot of it is conflicting and to be honest it has left me a bit confused. So i'd like to get it all in one thread as I know a lot of people are having similar issues.

I have the HTC Desire Telstra Australia version. I'm wanting to flash a generic Desire ROM onto it to get rid of the Telstra branding. However I don't want to root it. I tried this ROM here but I got an error about an incorrect bootloader version.

So my question is - Telstra Desire owners, what ROM have you flashed your Desire with, and have you managed to sort out the GPS issue which has plagued this version of the Desire?

I've found a lot of ROMs here but I don't know which to use.

I appreciate any info.

Cheers.

Firmware: 2.1

Build: 1.16.841.1 (that's with Telstra's GPS fix)

HBOOT: 0.75

Radio: 4.05.00.11

I rooted mine with the r4 root (which took me to HBOOT 0.80 annoyingly), and then flashed with MoDaCo Custom ROM r3, which is what I'm currently running. Rock solid stable, and got rid of the telstra guff (which I since added back some of for easy access to MyAccount, the WhereIs turn-by-turn navigator etc)

Never had GPS issues with this ROM, gets a lock in a matter of seconds. The only downside is now I can't unroot back to the telstra stock ROM in case of warranty repair, since I'm at HBOOT 0.80, and it is 0.75. Hopefully when 2.2 gets released, there'll be an update with a later bootloader which I can apply. I really only rooted so I could get A2SD, and a method of installing apps to SD card is included in 2.2.

I have tried to flash several ROMS without rooting unsuccessfully. I'm not a 100 percent sure, but I think it is because my Telstra Desire is running 1.16 and a downgrade to 1.15 is not possible. I figured that out by process of elimination.

I too would like to see if this is possible.

When I first got my Telstra HTC Desire (the day it was released) I went and straight away updated to a generic rom, using a goldcard. GPS Didn't work. I don't think it works with any of the other stock roms out there.

I have rooted the phone, and installed the Modaco Custom Rom, and have no GPS issues at all, and am loving the speed of the phone.

I was told by the head techie guy at onthegosolutions where I bought my phone that he had successfully flashed a generic stock rom without rooting and still had working gps BUT I too went ahead and rooted my phone and I am using an xda-developers r based rom (Pays) that works very well

Don't worry too much,

I got my Telstra HTC Desire today, and tried upgrading to a generic ROM with HBOOT 0.75... No luck! - I could only do it to a the ROM with 0.80 HBOOT (The Telstra original ROM seems to be versions above the Generic ROM.

ROMs were from this post: http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-desi...o-1-21-support/

FYI: I was on a 0.75 HBOOT (No GPS Fix)

Did you need to root first? What if you want to flash the upgraded Telstra ROM back? Would it flash (ver. 1.16)

I also got a phone from Onthegosolutions and I think he flashed a custom ROM as the Hboot as at .80 Either way, we may need to go to .80.

Also, did you catch this post? Seems as if all is working, but the phone was rooted.

Sharing my happy nextg-desire-on-telstra/vodafone with GPS guide (both telstra and voda sims work for 3g/H in metro at least)

1 - rooting your phone

http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-desi...o-1-21-support/

2 - creating a gold card

http://android.modaco.com/content/general-...ing-a-goldcard/

3 - installing an image

http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-desi...online-kitchen/

I did this on windowsxp 32 - it did not work (failed outright) on windows7-64.

Before

- firmware version 2.1-update1

- baseband version 32.30.00.28U_4.05.00.11

- Kernel version 2.6.29-3cb3dfbf htc-kernel@and18-2 #1

- Build number 1.16.841.1 CL171554 release-keys

- Software number 1.16.841.1

- Browser version WebKit 3.1

Put the gold card in, boot with back key held down

c:\r4-desire-root-alt 0.80>step1-windows.bat

- Desire Root Step 1

- About to start flash...

- etc...

no errors, no whining about anything

Don't turn off, don't do anything else, don't change the card (your goldcard is a normal card, right?)

Select Bootloader

Select Recovery mode

- "htc", buzz

- wait for the window that looks like an error (this is actually recovery mode)

c:\r4-desire-root-alt 0.80>step2-windows.bat

- Note: I had to force install the "My HTC" driver again at this point, no idea why

green text screen ... choose WIPE by using the touch sensor to move the cursor and clicking the touch sensor to select

- ... wipe data

- watch for "wipe data complete"

press volume down to return

Select "flash zip from SDCard"

- select rootedupdate.zip

- confirm...

Wait (mine took about 3 minutes to say "install from sdcard complete")

- select "reboot system now"

Watch for "quietly brilliant"

Power off

Copy R3-bravo-xxx.zip to the SD and reinsert into the desire

Power on with volume down held

Volume down to recovery, press power

Wait for recovery mode

c:\r4-desire-root-alt 0.80>recovery-windows.bat

green text screen ...

- Flash Zip from sdcard

- r3-bravo-desire-modacocustomrom-withadditions-...

wait...

select Reboot system now

It took mine a while the first boot (about a minute)

go install some stuff!

GPS works (fast TTFF). 3G/H work. wifi works.

After:

- firmware version 2.1-update1

- baseband version 32.36.00.28U-4.06.00.02_2

- Kernel version 2.6.29-82821fb5 htc-kernel@and18-2 #1

- Build number 1.21.MCR.2 CLxxxxxx release-keys

- Software number MoDaCo Custom ROM for the HTC Desire r3

- Browser version WebKit 3.1

Thanks for all the comments guys.

One thing i'm still confused about though.. Obviously the GPS issues were a problem with the Telstra ROM, as their update fixed it. So why wouldn't flashing to a stock HTC ROM fix it too?

How did you reinstall those apk's ?

Did you back them up before rooting/rebranding or are they available for download somewhere?

Wouldn't mind getting whereis back on mine since google maps navigation doesn't work in aus.

I have now 'debranded' my desire, but would love to add one part of the Telstra guff back on, the "my account app"

What do I need and how do I do it - I have extracted out the files of myaccount.apk, myaccount.odex, myaccount.png, but how do I get them back? (cant install the apk)

any ideas?

Oh, and just do a google search for maps brut, and you will be sorted with maps... :)

Is this possible? Because I would like the Bigpond icon/link on my homescreen, just like I used to have on my iPhone 4 (was an app you'd download from the App Store).

Unfortunately I've already flashed off the stock HTC Sense ROM :)

I had rooted my Telstra Desire with Revoked3 and ran a few different roms, couldnt install the new Telstra rom that is on the HTC site until I put my phone into Hboot before running rom file, once done, used the built in updater to download and install telstra 2.26 romnow my fone is back to being unrooted and back to a full Telstra fone again.

The file I ran was named RUU-MoDaCo-Bravo-1.15.405.4-release, but I had extracted the rom.zip from the new Telstra update and inserted it into the application, worked like a treat.

I just connected to my wifi and did a software update, it downloaded the new rom and installed it for me.

That file I used is available here........ http://rapidshare.com/files/428588551/RUU-...5.4-release.exe
