Is it possible to backup and restore the existing ROM when rooting

I want to root my HTC Desire but, it has a Orange UK branded ROM at the moment that I'd like to backup. I'm confused as to whether this is possible though. This thread seems to explain how to do it but, This post by Paul (about rooting) says "This process will wipe your device and there is currently no option to backup your device ROM before you start.".

Is there some detail that I am missing or, is the information in the first thread just newer?

You have answered your own question.

You have answered your own question.

So, what's the first thread I linked about?

It looks like it explains how to backup the ROM so that you can restore it later and that the comment in Paul's (much older) post about rooting the Desire is just out of date.

I apologise, I totally missed the first link, I have no idea about how to go about doing that.

What software version do you have just now? You could check here to see if they have the rom that you are running just now, and even if you are rooted, you can always go back to the original.

Thanks. Unfortunately the Orange UK ROM isn't there. My software number is 1.15.61.10 and radio is 32.30.00.28U_4.05.00.11. It seems to be hard to get hold of.

I don't know much about this but, it looks like I could follow the instructions in the first thread and make an update.zip which could be reloaded following the instruction in the second thread. I could probably post this somewhere for others who have already rooted their phone to use if they need a repair. What I'd like to know is, am I missing something important here? The comment in Paul's post about rooting makes me worry that I am.

EDIT: I don't know if this matters as far as making/using a non-rooted ROM is concerned, but I have HBOOT version 0.75
