Radio Question....

I have a non-branded desire (rooted without goldcard no problems) and I have never applied any radio update to the phone. My phone is on orange but is not an orange branded phone.

What advantage is there in installing a new radio rom?

If I were to install one, which one should I install?

Sorry for the noob question. Your answers are most appreciated.

Heres the latest Radios: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=687464

The advantage of newer radios is (possible) better signal and battery lifetime

Thanks. One more question, in Paul's rooting guide he says not to flash orange phones with a radio update. Like I said, mine is not an orange branded phone but it is on the orange network, is there a danger in flashing my phone with a radio update?

the danger is certain radios will sim lock your phone (as other orange users found out)

you can either just flash another (working) radio or you can pay for a sim-unlock code from somewhere like htcsimunlock

If the radio sim locks your phone - as has been mentioned you can simply revert back to whichever one works for you by downloading it from the link above and flashing it in recovery. Your phone will not remain simlocked. I was under the impression that this was happening on orange *provided* phones, regardless of lock status, not HTC provided phones as you would receive from Carphonewarehouse or phones4u. I could be wrong - but there is no harm in trying.

From reports it seems that there was only one radio that caused this problem - 32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2. The latest is 32.37.00.32U_4.06.00.16_2, available at XDA from the link in post #2, and certainly a few people in the forums on Orange have posted success with it without the lock problem.

Remember, when flashing a radio it completes on the first reboot - it can take a while so do NOT pull the battery on the phone thinking it has frozen or you will end up with a bricked device. ROM flashing can be salvaged, Radio flashing is where the risks are highest, so be careful. Make a note of your current radio version, as at least you know it works and can re-download it to flash if things aren't working as smoothly with the latest version. It's listed as the "baseband version" in the software information in "about phone" in settings (IIRC).

Cheers,

Andrew.
