Flash of my desire

I have a desire with the HTC rom (not rooted).

Build 1.15.405.4

kernel : 2.6.29.97

I'd like to root my phone.

1: Is it possible to put directly(during the rooting) the modaco custom rom based on 1.21?

2: My question is also about backup.

How can I save my sms and the content of my user dictionary to restore them on the rooted phone?

3 : After the flash will I be able to do the updates from htc without reflashing?

4 : Will the kernel be updated during the rooting?

5 : What about battery with the new rom

Sorry for 'stupid' question :-) But I'm new in the android world :-)

Normally you'd wait more than an hour before bumping, that just annoys people.

But in answer to point 2, mybackup pro in the market will back up your texts (as well as other things). theres a trial in the market.

The custom rom comes with the light version of Titanium Backup, so I'd install that from the market and use that. It's ready for a quick restore post flash then.

You can just use the the custom signed rom zip to replace the rooted zip in step 2 of the rooting process.
