For anyone with an untouched Dec. update Pulse thinking about upgrading

Hello, for anyone else with a completely untouched (not rooted, no custom roms etc) Pulse thinking about going for the "official" 2.1 update, here is my experience:

Backed up all my contacts and texts with MyBackupPro.

Downloaded the update, copied the "dload" folder onto my SD card.

Turned off phone, held the red/volume up/power combination and the "Preparing to update ..." message appeared, then it instantly reset itself without updating and booted up with the touchscreen not working! Major panic, turned it off again and this time it booted back up into the update installer, whew :(

Installation went fine (apart from having to manually remove the battery at the end as it didn't auto-reset), phone happily went through all the set-up wizard. The icon shortcuts at the bottom were fine, so I didn't bother with the "Customized HU" second part of the update.

Downloaded AppInstaller from the market, re-installed MyBackupPro and restored contacts/texts etc. Voila!

Thoughts upon going from stock 1.5 with December update to the Hungarian 2.1:

General operation is faster and snappier, especially opening and closing things like messaging and gmail.

Battery life is SIGNIFICANTLY improved.

Have had no force closes or crashes, though there is a strange delay in downloading some apps from the market (after starting the download nothing actually appears in the notification bar for a good ten seconds or so - nevertheless it still does download fine once it starts)

The one thing that is slightly bugging me is that using the main browser, pages load up fully zoomed out and you have to double-tap to make it do the "fit to page" zoom level. Am I missing an old option setting somewhere?

Overall, I hugely recommend the update, especially as T-mobile UK are still pretending there is no 2.1 for the Pulse yet. Easy to install, greatly improves the phone.

I second that.

I've also noticed the strange delay when downloading from the market. I wonder what causes it...

My experience of upgrading from the 1.7 MCR is very similar. This 2.1 is a great ROM with a few little quirks.

This is a bug in DownloadProvider.apk, it was introduced in leaked version too.

It can be fixed by overwriting it with the one from G1 ROM.

How would I do that given I've got no clue about linux etc...

Does some one have a copy of this for us, and can we just run it to overwrite existing one.?

I did the same but through the update MENU,less frightening

Very happy with 2.1 but indeed, apps downloaded from MARKET is much slower

But on the whole, pulse + 2.1 equals an iphone in my humble opinion ....
