Guest tomgrek Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 Is there much benefit to rooting under Froyo, other than full backups and removing the Amazon app? What I'd really like now that Outlook works is to get around the security policies that my new 'Device Administrator' (ie work) has imposed on my device, namely not have to enter a pin number to unlock. Is that possible with root?
Guest Pawl. Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 Is there much benefit to rooting under Froyo, other than full backups and removing the Amazon app? Rooting always has it's benefits. First off, you can install apps that need root access (the ones I use are AdFree, MarketEnabler, SetCPU, Titanium Backup). Fixing Froyo to access protected apps (such as pMessenger, Doodle Jump the ones I know, there are more though). In time, we will all get new modded roms, such as Modaco Version of Froyo, Cyanogen. Will also give you the options to theme and customize your phone however you wish. It's true, right now there really aren't the full benefits, since everything is still adaption to Froyo (and of course, froyo is still a test build out there, the official release will soon be out in time, along with the kernel source for modders out there!). Either way, you'd probably get it ready and root, and wait for the new stuff to arrive.

Even titanium backup is dealt a near-fatal blow with the app data backup in 2.2. Seems the only large thing it benefits to root is the ability to backup your rom, and install other roms like the Desire rom. Honestly, for users like me who are satisfied with vanilla, that does not leave me with a lot. Of course CM adds in plenty of extra little feature goodies(trackball awake, how I love thee!) so it at least makes it worth it to wait for the next round of the CM rom.
