I found the newest radio on 3 to be better for me than the earlier ones. I suggest that you try a few and see which one works best for you.

I would be careful with updating the Radio to often, one false moved and you could brick it, just a fyi

What utter rubbish.

There's a small chance you can screw a phone up by applying updates, but it's just that: a small chance. I guess the more updates you perform the greater the probability you might run into the small chance, but it's not going to brick your phone if you've done a nandroid backup - because you can just fall back on the last backup. (And who runs an update.zip without backing up first?) Worst case scenario is loosing your info and starting with a blank phone

You can only properly brick your phone if you screw up updating the device SPL.

Don't be afriad to hack, Android phones are robust :(

Its not the number of times you flash your phone, it comes down to incompetence. If you can't wait for the phone to install and pull the battery or not have enough charge on the battery then you risk having a phone that doesn't work after the flash.

If you are installing a new SPL or manufacturer's RUU (which installs a new SPL), and you pull the battery, then you have bricked your phone. At this point you can try to plead innocence and hope your manufacturer sends you a replacement.

I found the latest one better than the one that came with it but I haven't tested the others because most of the ROMs recommend you to have the latest radio so I just stick with that.
