You 'apply' it by installing it from the market. Then if you hit the home button, Android will ask, which home application to choose from, and if you would like to make it the default.

Try it and see, your milage may vary depending on how you have the phone set up. It's easy to just uninstall it.

Check out Launcher pro and adwlauncher on the market. Personally I'm using ADWLauncher and it seems to work fine, but launcherPro did too.

The common opinion is what LauncherPro is the fastes launcher you can currently get. And indeed it is fast but on my phone it takes a while till the desktop appears after I change from an app

I've read a lot about how LauncherPro is much smoother with scrolling, but I didn't notice it - maybe it's only noticable on faster phones. I tried it for a while, but seem to be using adwlauncher more as I prefer the customisation options, and the speed seems to be about the same.

Live wallpapers and some widgets (eg. Beautiful widgets home) seem to hit performance pretty hard regardless of launcher, I think I'll steer clear of them for now.
