Disabling side volume buttons

Can you disable the volume buttons on the side of the Desire. I find they get knocked very easily even when locked and miss loads of calls.

my phone is not rooted is it still possible?

Aha, I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one with issues relating to the volume buttons - how did HTC not realise the positioning and size of these buttons is pretty terrible! I can't provide any helpful advice though, I'm afraid.
