Please help - Cannot boot just get "remote: image update error" when trying to flash anything!

I tried a FroYo rom and then decided to go back. I know the radio from FroYo breaks a few things so went to fastboot to flash the old one and had a load of issues. I tried reflashing the original recovery following some other topic on xda but have never been able to boot into it anyway.

I can't boot past fastboot at all! Anything I try to flash with fastboot now gives me "FAILED (remote: image update error)"

I have tried everything I can think of and I am really worried :(

Please someone point me in the right direction. I can't even flash Amon_Ra's recovery!

I have an unlocked bootloader yet that error seems to be some kind of 'sorry you can't do that' message, I just don't know why!
