Guest kroogar Posted June 4, 2010 Report Posted June 4, 2010 Hi guys Sorry if this is totally noob but I haven't found the answer yet... After having followed this guide I now have root on my Desire (thanks to craigcrawford1988 for the guide). Now I would like to experiment with a custom rom. Finding a new rom is not a problem but installing it seems a bit tricky. I just cant find a guide. I guess all custom roms are applied the same way and that it's pretty similar to rooting my device where I have to swap the rootedupdate.zip with the custom rom zip. Right? Do I need a goldcard for flashing with a custom rom? And how about Nandroid backup? How do I do that? Is the backup placed on my pc or on my SD card? Is Nandroid built into the rooted flash or di I need to install new SW on my pc or on my phone? I have a feeling that rooting my phone was the bigger step of 1) rooting and 2) flashing a custom rom but I'm not sure :( If I choose to go with a Froyo based custom rom can I allways flash the rootedupdate.zip and get back to what I have now? Sorry for the questions guys but this is uncharted territory for me and I'm just scared that I'll brick my device. Thanks in advance ./kroogar

Guest spammyspam Posted June 4, 2010 Report Posted June 4, 2010 +1 If we could be told what each of the steps actually *do* that might help. What's being uploaded at each stage and why? Also.. how unrooted people can save their data going forward would be good too :(

Also.. how unrooted people can save their data going forward would be good too :( Boot into Recovery by doing the normal 'power up with DOWN VOLUME' button pressed, chose RECOVERY then wait for red triangle then plug phone into PC. Once you're there run the recovery program that's applicable to your operating system (recovery-windows.bat for instance). This boots back into the recovery console. Flash your ROM via the normal steps (wiping all bits etc). There's so many resources here and on XDA about this so I've kept it brief but holla if you need more.
Guest kroogar Posted June 4, 2010 Report Posted June 4, 2010 ...but holla if you need more. Only one thing to be absolutely dead certain: The SD card in the phone has to be prep'ed with the custom rom zip file before starting the procedure right?
Guest spammyspam Posted June 4, 2010 Report Posted June 4, 2010 (edited) holla if you need more. Thanks for that. This is assuming you've already rooted right? Any tips on saving data? Edited June 4, 2010 by spammyspam
