Infrared modem and beam problems

Recommended Posts

This is truly annoying - not being able to use SPV as an infrared modem for PocketPC and to receive appointments and contacts from PocketPC via infrared. Plus voice calls often diverted to answerphone or dropped for no reason! Plus GPRS reception very patchy even in London. And the battery lasts hardly 24 hours. And the Orange 156 support being clueless!

Is there any function in the phone, apart from on/off, that actually works?

I think you've covered everything there that's bad, so list all the other things that the phone can do and you have a very long list. ;)

you can use the SPV as an infrared modem, see this post on the tips'n'tricks list. I tried it using my Ipaq 3850 and it works.

and to be honest I have seen very few of the problems you mention. Maybe I'm lucky, but my SPV has been pretty much faultless since I got it.

sarge, the trick you mentioned lets you connect to the internet via Orange GPRS, thus using up your GPRS bundle - this is not what I am after, as I need to dial-up into my corporate network using SPV as an infrared modem. It's my second SPV with the same problems. Infrared receive for SPV doesn't work with Microsoft's own PocketPC - it's a joke!

Provod, I would imagine that if you can connect to the net using GPRS from a PocketPC you should be able to do dial-up connections. If I were you I would check the connection settings on the PocketPC match with your target network. I would be very surprised if this couldn't be done. I would presume you've already done this, but a quick search on this site and google should give you some pointers on any sticky points in setting up dialup connections using pocked PC. Personally, I dont think the problem lies with the SPV as if the IR works for GPRS it should work for CSD (as its basically doing the same thing.) Also, are you sure that you've activated the IR modem on the SPV (programs>accessories>modemlink - menu>activate, and that its set to IrComm etc. (sorry if this is "teaching grandmothers to suck eggs" but things like this are always worth mentioning, just in case)

Sarge, to connect my PocketPC to my corporate LAN (and various ISPs) I use Nokia with no problem. It's a similar process, i.e. activate IR on the phone and it works just fine. With SPV only Orange GPRS connection works through their own network, which is useless for me, and very useful for Orange, as one is restricted to use the GPRS bundle. When I try to use SPV to connect to my LAN I can see that the IR connection between SPV and PocketPC is activated - two arrows initially appear on both devices, then the icon disappears from SPV first and in about 30 sec from the PocketPC - it just won't connect.

Quick search on this forum showed that this setup does not work.

Cheers
