Desire not recognized when in FASTBOOT mode

So I'm trying to follow the rooting guide, but I'm stuck at the step #1 :)

When I start the phone in FASTBOOT mode and connect it to my PC, nothing happens. Windows (XP SP3) doesn't recognize it (it actually plays that sound you hear when you connect USB devices, but nothing else happens), and if I try the command prompt thing, it just stays stuck on "waiting for device".

I tried to use a different USB socket and a different PC (running XP as well), but nothing seems to help.. what can I do?

You seem to have a driver issue. Try downloading HTC sync to get them. If that fails, use the TinyCoreLinux guide.

Cool, I installed HTC sync and everything is fine now, thanks!!! :)

I really wish that was mentioned in the guide, I wasted a lot of time trying to figure out what's wrong :)
