Pulse 2.1 App2sd not working

Hi All!

You guys are really great putting all this work into customizing the Pulse!

I am new to all this stuff and I think I did everything right with upgrading my Pulse to 2.1, installing Ramon RA, etc., but now ran into a problem which I can not solve. I have been searching these forums for 2 days but still can't find the solution.

So my problem:

App2sd is not working on my Pulse. I have OscillationROM R7B installed at the moment. I have ran \system\bin\a2sd check and got the following errors:

....

[!] Ext partition found but not mounted.

[ ] Checking Ext partition...

e2fsck 1.40.8 (13-Mar-2008)

/system/bin/e2fsck: Permission denied while trying to open /dev/block/mmcblk0p2

You must have r/w access to the filesystem or be root

[ ] Mounting ext partitions

mount: permission denied. (are you root?)

[x] Mounting ext partition failed.

....

For me it seems like I don't have root access but how could it be? I already have custom ROM on the phone. How could it be without root access?

Thank you for the help! I really appreciate it!

I even have a Superuser Permissions app in my menu, although it gives a blank black screen when I start it.

What ROM did you install? If you're using the original update it doesn't have apps2sd support. Cheers!

Thanks for the quick reply!

As I have mentioned I currently have Oscillation ROM R7B installed, so it should contain apps2sd.

Have you disable the "USB debugging" in settings > Applications > Development.

I did now, but no effect. How is usb debugging related to root access and app2sd?

Pull out your SD card

Format/Erase your SD card in PC

Put it back in the phone

Partition your SD card thru Recovery

Put the ROM you want on your SD card

Flash it

DONE

OK, now I'm starting to worry. I did exactly what you said and my Pulse is now stuck at Android text when booting. I tried to reflash it 3 times even with different ROMs but the problem is the same.

Did you installed HUNGARIAN_UPDATE?

Did you installed HUNGARIAN_UPDATE?

YEP. That was my first step.

In chronology:

Hungarian update - Amon RA Recovery - Custom ROMs

At this time I have realized that App2sd is not working and I thought that it should be a problem with root access (as the a2sd check said that it seems that I don't have it) so I started to search and found a rooting solution for 2.1 called su-2.1-e-signed.zip. I have installed it but had no effect, then reflashed with a new ROM and after that I wrote the first post and did what you wrote.

Try to remove your SD card and boot up your phone, if that doesn't working then re flash HUNGARIAN_UPDATE again.

Thank you for the advice, pulling out the SD worked. What caused the problem?

However I'm back where I have started this thread: my phone is working fine, but app2sd still doesn't work and I get the same status from terminal, that a2sd says I am not root.

In terminal type "su" and hit enter, you will have root within terminal

I really appreciate your help!

After getting root access in terminal I typed /system/bin/a2sd check again and received a new error:

...

[!] Mount point found..no further action required.

[ ] Checking for ext partition

[!] Ext partition found but not mounted.

[ ] Checking Ext partition...

e2fsck 1.40.8 (13-Mar-2008)

/dev/block/mmcblk0p2 has unsupported feature(s): extents gdt_checksum

e2fsck: Get a newer version of e2fsck!

[ ] Mounting ext partitions

mount: mounting /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 on /system/sd failed: Invalid argument

[x] Mounting ext partition failed.

[x] Can't continue script...aborting.

...

What is the next step to make app2sd work?

What type of ext you have on SD.... ext2, ext3 or ext4...how did you partitioned your SD within Recovery?

Ok, I reformatted with ext2 and a2sd seems to work as it says in the check that the card is mounted and apps are installed there. How is it then that I still have about 30MB free space and my storage still decreases when I install a new app?

Because Dalvik Cash is still on SD card..if you have Class4/6 SD card move Dalvik Cash on SD card (search forums how to do that)

I run the RMB r7 rom with a2sd, but i also fear its not working, what i think is that apps get BOTH installed in /data and in /system/sd

see my df

df -h

Filesystem Size Used Available Use% Mounted on

tmpfs 52.7M 12.0k 52.7M 0% /dev

tmpfs 4.0M 0 4.0M 0% /sqlite_stmt_journals

/dev/block/mtdblock1 110.0M 100.4M 9.6M 91% /system

/dev/block/mtdblock2 80.3M 72.3M 8.0M 90% /data

/dev/block/mtdblock3 20.0M 7.9M 12.1M 40% /cache

/dev/block/mmcblk0p2 228.4M 72.8M 143.4M 34% /system/sd

/dev/block//vold/179:1

14.6G 4.9G 9.7G 33% /sdcard

Whats going on here? I already adb-ed into it a couple of time with a2sd check/ a2sd install

and I also moved dalvik back to phone since i only have a class2 card...

How did you use this command? Via adb or a terminal emulator on the phone? If the latter, did you say "su" before running a2sd?

I think this is not the case, they install to /system/sd, and their .dex file goes to /data.

You can move dalvik cache to SD card, if it is fast enough.

Try to go deeper, check how big is /data/dalvik-cache, and other things:

du -s /data/*

then you see what is where.

btw, /data/app is a symlink to /system/sd/app, so do not count that when looking at the result of du.
