new to rooting and android

hey im new to the site and the whole rooting process, i have had an iphone for last 18 months and jailbroken that and done everything possible to that phone, ive done some hacking before or modifying with iphones and xbox's but never to a android device.

basically i wanted to find out what is the advantages of rooting the htc desire, what it gives me and what modifications i can do to it.

ive looked around and seem some roms that look great, one of my main questions is can this process be undone and flashed back to the standard, 02-uk rom.

if anyone can help or give me some pointers it will be much appreciated.

Any changes can be reversed - all you need is the original O2 ROM (which you can find on XDA Devs) so you can revert it back for warranty issues...
