Guest saintadam Posted June 15, 2010 Report Posted June 15, 2010 Hi there, I recently added MCR 3.2 but cant install many of apps and want to add a 2.1 ROM Question is there a straightforward way of moving to 2.1 ? Hi, let me give yo my horror story about what NOT to do to try this! I originally installed a custom (Orange UK) ROM last year when I first got my Hero and it was very straightforward. Having recently seen somebody running 2.1 on a Desire (I think) I thought I would upgrade my ROM. So, I moved to MCR 3.2 as a stepping stone while Paul completed the MCR4.0 build and all was well. I then tried to go to MCR 4.0 and failed spectacularly many times. First, I tried to update flash my recovery image and that would not work either on the phone or from a PC/Linux. I installed ROM manager and it managed to get over that hurdle. Then I tried to update the ROM and it got into loads of boot loops, crashes, etc. I finally got it installed after formatting the SD card (yes, it needs to be done again even if it has been previously partitioned for installing a previous ROM), copied back all my apps onto the SD card and ran Titanium backup to restore them all, only for sense to keep crashing. :) So, the final solution to a stable build (that I have now) is to reformat the SD card, wipe all parts of the phone you can and install from scratch, forget restoring backups (mind you, I did have nearly 100 apps installed on a 16Gb card) just download again from the Market. As I run all of my mail, calendar, tasks, etc through Google, I had no issues with setting any of that up again. Hopefully, you will have a smoother transition than I had! :)
Guest Olatho Posted June 15, 2010 Report Posted June 15, 2010 I ran into one problem that I have not seen described by anybody else. I had "upgraded" the ext2-partition on my SD-card - not to ext3, but to ext4(!). And while ext3 is now supported by the official kernel (in MCR4), ext4 is not. I could probably have fixed this by mounting the SD-card on my linux-box, copying the content of the ext4-partition to the PC, reformatting the partition as ext3, and copying the content back (downgrade from ext4 to ex3 is not supported it seems), but i decided it was easier to just wipe. I did a full Titanium Backup before the upgrade, so after a wipe and reinstall of MCR4 I could restore everything quite easily - including calendar entries (I don't sync with google), notes, settings in different apps and so on.

You are no doubt correct! I only came across Titanium backup when trying to solve the various upgrade issues I was having and just chose the full backup and full restore options. Anyway, I now have a very stable phone with MCR4.0 r3 on it, with my own baked ROM choices (without the dreaded PLURK!).

Guys thanks for your response, So to just recap the steps to upgrade from MCR3.2 to 4 - Take a full titanium backup(just in case) - Reformat the SD Card - Complete Wipe - Download or upload "upload.zip" from MCR4 - Execute upload.zip Are the above steps correct, sorry I am a newbie,

I've changed to many different ROM's and have never formatted the SD Card. Just wipe before flashing.
