The RAM really is too small

Okay, so this really is getting to me now. I want to be able to answer a text message without losing my web page, I want to be able to skip a music track without losing my maps directions, I want to be able to multitask! ;)

After using my brothers pulse mini (Yeah, that device is 100% better than ours despite its tiny screen) which actually has ram I can really see how backwards (and iPhone like) our device really is. There has to be a solution for this!

Being able to use a SWAP or similar workaround may help, but people have tried and not been successful :(

For anyone that is wondering (and never had an other android device) the pulse mini can have many apps open at one time. I had the; Browser, Skfire, Music, Servo, Touchpal, Gmail, Facebook, Twitter, Maps and PC Services all open at the same time and was at the homescreen. I could easily switch to any of these apps (The ones I use the most) without any loading / waiting and the app opened on the screen I wanted it to

However the "Homescreen fix" seems to be a prime example of a simple workaround which may apply to this. The homescreen fix stops the Homescreen task from being killed when the device is starved for RAM, so it may be possible to apply the same method to important apps.

Would it be possible to apply this (or a similar) fix to an app such as Opera mini?

Is there another way we can solve the only real flaw with out device?

Or do I have to "find" the money to buy a device with more RAM to fully enjoy the android experience?

This must be possible. It would even be useful on devices even with the increased RAM to keep the most wanted (and used) apps open and close the less used apps instead.

Thanks

Reset the autokill defaults with auto memory manager or something similar.

I'm currently running the HU 2.1 and its very clear that RAM is far too small (recently browser has been regularily been crashing in mid session + had to do a battery out reset today). Been waiting for an oopotunity to try out some of the ROMs based on it with a2sd etc .... even with this is the RAM available sufficient to avoid major problems?

Anyway, now that Huawei have released the "ROM" that allows the Dec update to be reapplied I may well look at 1.5 based ROMs as well.

Oh my, forget the idea of making some apps persistant...

This will definetly go into the opposite direction.

The phone will freeze all the time, making it unusable.

My Pulse freezed several times while I was using Opera Mini, and I had to take out the battery.

This is really annoying as the Pulse needs 2 - 3 minutes for me before I can use it again =/

I guess a possible workaround would be a swap partition on the SD card.

Does the new A2SD+ script still depend on swap being disabled?

If not we might just try to enable swap (I don't know if we need the kernel source for that).

Best regards,

BigBear

Swap definitely needs kernel source, there are parts that cannot be compiled as loadable modules - unless you want to reverse engineer the kernel binary.

I tired auto memory manager as suggested above but couldn't find an option to change the priority of certain apps. So I just set it so that the system would kill nothing.. Worked brilliantly, was able to multitask like never before but then I started to see all kinds of apps and processes appearing in my mini task bar widget. Everything from SU Root Superuser to The 3D gallery app. Then the phone just got bogged down and froze ;)

Could someone explain to me why all these random apps started up by themselves?

But the theory worked. All I want to do really is set the priority of Opera mini up so that it only ever closes to prevent a freeze.

Just out of interest has anyone took this phone to bits yet? is it at all feasible to replace the ram with another module that is bigger? where from you ask, well maybe if we chased Huwaie to their suppliers we might be able to get somewhere. Just a though?

If I get the replacement Pulse from Paul I will definetly pull my old one appart.

I thought of pulling it appart already, but I just can't risk zo loose warranty now :-(

Well I'm using this ( forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=558822 ) with opera added to the script.txt and it actually closes a little less often ie. I can now switch to wifinder using the recent applications menu and back to opera and most if the time my session stays intact.

It sucks that they released the phone with only 192mb. How much more 256mb would have costed? Unfortunatly I'm stuck with this 'till march, 2012! I will probably end up buying a featurephone in a year or so because sometimes I'm tempted to throw the pulse out on my window.

Disassembly HTC Touch

Above is a guide on how to take apart a HTC Touch, I can't quite figure out which is the ram as the picures aren't big enough but I think its the top right. In which case I would imagine, it will have a model number on it, so If we can find out who makes it and they happen to make a the same ram but greater in size with the same number of pins. I see no reason why you couldn't just put that straight in and boot the phone up.

Sometimes it's not even a phone. If I'm playinf, watching a video or doing anything that requires a lot of RAM or CPU and someone calls it can take 20-30 seconds before it shows who the caller is. Also, opening messaging take ages too.

It amazes me how many corners are cut when the make phones at the moment, I was thinking to myself only the other day, surely the phone application and messaging should be given seperate priorities over everything else like for example maybe even separate ram? Games on computer get graphics cards so wouldn't it make sense to have a phone ram?

Didn't Bobo get one off Paul? I'm sure he would gladly disassemble one, although I'd tell him to be careful, don't know when a Pulse will decide it want no more pulse and goes "beep beep beeeeeeeeeeeeeep' . Hopefully never but who knows?
