Is the official UK T-Mobile 2.1 update EVER going to arrive?

It's getting beyond a joke now. A good six months since the OS was announced, and multiple supposed release dates, and still nothing has arrived. I've been waiting and waiting for this thing, March would have been OK, but then it was April, May, and now June. Do we have any more information on when something might finally dribble out?

I've held off on looking at the Hungarian ROM through all the bugs that seem to be commented upon, with the belief that the official ROM would have these nailed down. However at this rate the phone will never get an official update.

I've got to say, my next phone will be with a manufacturer that gets their finger out.

Yeah, I keep hoping, but it's a bit hard to believe anything Huawei says at this point. They are now saying July for my phone's upgrade. But we've heard that kind of thing before, so I'm not in a very trusting mood right now.

I got this phone because it fit my requirements at the time: an inexpensive way to find out if I was going to like Android, the promise of the "soon to be released" 2.1 update, and a 3.5 inch screen (instead of the tiny 3.2" screens HTC had out at the time). But I think I'm going to end up regretting not holding out longer for a HTC phone with the larger screen at a reasonable price.

Oh well, typically my carrier will let customers "upgrade" to a new phone at 18 months of the 2 year contract. So only 13 months to go! ;)

I don't understand what are you waiting for. The Hungarian is the official ROM. Custo_hu removes most of the bugs.

There is no such a thing like a bug-free ROM, if that is what you have been waiting for.

Well, any officially released rom should be 100% major bug-free

That will never happen from any manufacturer.

As for T-Mobile, they will release it if and when they decide to if ever. Android 2.1 was never promised for the Pulse officially and should not have been used as a buying decision.

I would like 2.1, but, and lets be honest here, the Pulse was a cheap phone which runs Android 1.5. I bought it on this basis and never expected to much from this little phone. If I had paid £400 quid for it then i may have expected better support with upgrades in a timely manner. The phone does everything I want it to and more. If T Mobile UK do not release an upgrade then I will not be unhappy. If you want to upgrade your phone there are many many options on this forum.

At the end of the day you get what you pay for.

Huawei are the only people doing official updates for this phone (understandable, they designed it). T-Mobile are not going to be able to fix any bugs - they will simply ship whatever Huawei sends to them after testing. If it fails the testing, they'll just never release it, waiting for a new version that might never arrive.

Personally, I think Huawei have now dropped support for the Pulse - there developers are most likely hacking code for other newer devices now.

If you want a bug-free 2.1 or 2.2, then you need to buy a HTC or similar, but you'll pay for that priviledge. The Pulse was meant as a cheap Android phone running 1.5, hence the small RAM size. We are lucky to get 2.1 working at all.

I don't understand you, guys, you are all so impatient, Sony-Ericsson promises 2.1 update for Xperia X10 by the end of the year ;)

3 in Sweden has announced that they are going to receive a 2.1 ROM from Huawei this week that they are going to test.

Of course this should be vanilla and not Pulse, but at least it's good to see that Huawei is doing something else than just slacking...

I gave up waiting and went for the Hungarian update and I'm so glad I did! I've not really had any problems with it and it runs so much better than 1.5

The random freezes was a big issue for me, should be able to browse the web without it freezing every time.

Agreed, been running Hungarian 2.1 since it came out and no problems. Screen is much more responsive and everything seems smoother than 1.5.

Two things.

First, some of us aren't using T-Mobile Pulses. So our situation is somewhat different. I have been informed that using the "non-official" 2.1 upgrades at this point on my phone results is crashes when using 3G. That isn't really acceptable for me. So it is important to remember that some people on this forum are using some other hardware version of the U8220 and that solution that works so well for you might not work well for them at all.

Second, to answer another comment, yes, I did hear verbally from a Huawei rep that 2.1 would definitely be released for my phone. I took that as a "promise", and it was part of my purchasing decision. I can understand delays, but as the OP mentioned, it is getting to be kind of long at this point. Maybe if Huawei had not announced things like "the end of March or April", I'd be feeling differently.

But I do appreciate all of the great work that has been done on ROMs for this device on this site. ;)

I accept the fact that some people are not using a T-Mobile Pulse, but this forum is called "Device Specific: T-Mobile Pulse", so it stands to reason that most people will be expected to have a T-Mobile Pulse... :-)

I have a t-mobile pulse (unlocked to O2) and am running the WIP rom. I have been using this rom since it was released and other than the odd FC have no issues with it.

Yes, I'm tired of waiting too. It's the expectation of waiting but not knowing if/when we can get the official UK 2.1 release. It's torturous.

I was patient till end of May and early June but this is just annoying now.

If there were no update to be had then fair enough, we'd not be left hanging like this but there is or should be, so it's not nice checking their site and finding nothing day after day.

I desire a faster phone, smoother, slicker with more gadgetry goodness. Give me some 'more professional' looking applications. Put a defibrillator in it and a jet pack, I want to be James Bond!

What's the most stable 2.1 hacked ROM with a2sd included (to get a bit more space) ?

Its got to be stable, and everything's got to work.

And what about swap for getting some more space?

It depends on your needs. WIP abd FLB are the best now, Oscillation isa bit outdated.

WIP if you vant original rom's feeling plus a2sd plus root.

FLB if you want most tweaks and vanilla style.

and currwntly no swap for 2.1. (kernel sources are not published.)

Which is possibly the main reason the X10 sells on eBay for less than £200, whilst the similarly specced Nexus One sells for £400 odd (unless you get one imported and pay more taxes and fees)

Granted, they're not 100% identical hardware by any means, but certainly comparable.

I'd probably buy an X10 if sony could pull their finger out a bit, but by the time they finally get 2.x onto the X10, motorola will be on 2GHz devices with brain implants and we'll all be obsolete.

Releasing a phone with an OS that out of date has surely damaged them, and hopefully other manufacturers will take note.

LOOK manufacturers, double the selling price for putting stock android on it, and keeping it up-to-date. When will they get this?

Agreed. Manufacturers need to change the way they traditionally clog up phones with their own branding and OS 'tweaks'. If they want to truly put useful stuff in, then maybe they should use the marketplace? Then we can decide for ourselves if we want it or not.

I knew I'd spoken too soon, there's some sign of an update on T-Mobile's site now but just open source code for the mini Pulse. Perhaps we'll be getting something soon? First update since December and all that. Won't hold my breath though.

this open source may be just what we need for the original pulse, if it's android 2.1 and not too different to the pulse then it may be possible to get custom kernels going from it!
