Voice mail message indicator disappears

Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me. Everytime I receive a voice mail, the message indicator appears in the status bar, but then disappears after a while even if I have not checked my voice mail Does anyone one know if this is a bug or a setting somewhere? Any help is appreciated.
