Guest xspyda Posted June 22, 2010 Report Posted June 22, 2010 Coming from Symbian, I'm finding the way Android handles access points a little disconcerting. There are two things in particular I would like my Desire to do but can't seem to find a way to make it do it. 1) use a network connection ONLY when required rather than staying active all the time. My Nokia would just connect say when I fired up email or any other network reliant app but ATT all other times it would stay off, preserving battery life. 2) I want to be able to sent mms when WiFi is active. Seems I have to kill the WiFi for mms to work. Again, my Nokia would pull in an mms regardless of my WiFi connection status. 3) I want to be able to priotitise network connections. Ie use WiFi if available and if not use 3g. I don't want to be continually switching WiFi on and off! Please tell me there are solutions to the above - these seem simple things that my Nokia has always handled with ease. Thanks.

These phones are really designed to have an 'always' on connection.. and to be honest, being a Nokia user for years, I'm much happier with how Android handles stuff. 1. In settings go to 'Wireless and Networks' > 'Mobile Networks' > 'Mobile Network Settings' > Untick 'Enable always-on mobile-data' - Will probably solve your 'issue' 2. This is a bit of an issue in Android, had it happen to me sometimes, but not all the time *shrugs* 3. Erm - it does that already.

Maybe I have just not got to grips with Android yet. Symbian handles this seamlessly in comparison. Perhaps it just needs a little more work to get working the way I want. 2. But while connected to 3g is it not still looking for available wifi network?
Guest DigitalC Posted June 23, 2010 Report Posted June 23, 2010 But while connected to 3g is it not still looking for available wifi network? Provided you have WiFI enabled, it will seek out and connect automatically, overriding the 3G connection.

Ok, all well and good but I assume that means when you are out of wifi coverage the desire will be constantly looking for a wifi signal, therefore using more power? I want it to lie dormant until an app calls on it to connect.
