Non destructive way of rooting with fake ota?

Dumb question but does this rooting method work on the HTC Desire?

Has it been confirmed on the Desire?

What does it do anyway? Does it only add the super user apk to the system? Does it do more?

I have a stock Desire and would like to backup some apk, would that help me?
