Problem after OTA update

Hey, been reading for a while now and have had a few helpful tips and directions, but couldnt find a solution to this one so hopefully you can help

Just got a messege on my unrooted desire saying there was an OTA update (at first i thought YAY froyo) but no 1.21......blah blah, went through the steps and as i was installing it, the device settings backup step failed (but wouldnt let me stop the install) anyway after waiting ages for the update to install it turned on and said it had found a backup so i assumed that it had worked and i had got lucky. it spent about an hour trying to load the backup so i turned off the phone in the normal way and switched it back on and got the same messege about the backup. tryed again after an hour gave up and restarted and got the messege but canceled it and decided i would just lose the data and re do the things i had lost. Most of my settings have been saved such as wifi passwords, bookmarks, text messeges etc but i had lost things like wallpapers homescreen layouts etc which were easy enough to sort out.

Anyway here is the problem, when i go to view my text messeges i get the contacts name and then a number (the amount of texts between us) next to the name that wasnt there before the update, the only way i have found to get rid of the number is to delete all the messeges between us and start over (which i would rather not do). Also with some of the older messeges over a few days, it is showing each one 3 times.

the 3 messege repeat thing isnt too much of a problem but i would really like a way of getting rid of the number next to the contact without losing my messeges. PLEASE HELP

(sorry to make this so long winded but thought its better to give all the info i have worked out)
