USB cable replacements

I've ordered 4 different USB cables from ebay, tried all of them with the pulse, and none of them function correctly.

None of them actually charge the phone. When plugged in, the phone says "charging", but the battery capacity _decreases_ over time! I've tried them on multiple PCs, too.

One of the cables allows me to mount the SD card and copy files (no charging though).

They all cause the phone & PC to behave very strangely - have had at least one hard (bluescreen) crash after plugging in.

The stock cable works perfectly, every time, on all PCs.

Have I really just been so unlucky as to have purchased 4 dud microUSB cables, or is there something proprietary about the Huawei cable?

Thanks,

Jules

I have the original cable and a blackberry cable. Both work fine. You might just be unlucky or it's a sign that the USB port on your pulse it's on it's way out.

Definitely nothing proprietary. I have a Mini-USB charger for my Sat nav and older phone in the car. I bought a £2 Mini->Micro converter blob and it charges my pulse perfectly.

It looks similar to this, but a bit smaller:

I agree that there is something going on with cables. In total I purchase four different third-party cables as well. Only two would charge; the other two would not, even though the phone showed it was charging. All the cables would still transmit data, just not charge. I have no explanation, but there must be something different about how these cables are manufactured. Incidentally, both of the cables that work well also uses an adapter like the one Speckles shows. So the two working cables are different from each other, but they both use the same type of Mini to Micro adapter. I didn't find a third-party Micro cable that actually would charge. YMMV.

Here's a decent Blackberry USB cable that I use as opposed to the original Huawei one, as it actually slips in and out of the USB port much more easily, reducing the risk of screwing the port up. Thanks to meinnit from the Broken USB port thread:

I borrowed a Blackberry micro USB cable to charge my phone and noticed that it slides in and out of the USB port with very little force compared to the supplied cable. I decided to order my own cable from eBay which I find is so much easier on the USB port and should hopefully make it last longer. Would highly recomended changing the cable over. Its only slightly shorter than the supplied cable but you can purchase an extention cable to make it however long you want.

Hope this helps some people!

I would definitely recommend everyone getting one as we're probably all shatting ourselves over the prospect of the port breaking and having to deal with T-Mobile. On the other hand, your phone might be well and truly buggered, but it's worth a shot.

Micro and Mini USB connectors have 5 pins, whilst standard USB has 4 pins.

Both pin 4 and pin 5 need to grounded for charging to occur. Some cables don't bother to connect both, so they only work as a data cable.

I've just checked this on my SPV-500 (Mini-USB), and it's the same.

I got a Nokia branded one from Amazon for about a pound and it works perfectly.

Oddly I bought this cable and it's stiff. But the original USB cable I have with the pulse is quite easy to push in and remove.

;) Perhaps this cable is "stiff" compared to your original, must be a newer and better cable that Huawei have included, as I think you got your Pulse quite recently.

I bought my used from ebay last month. Previous owner had it for 6 months with very light usage.

Maybe something wrong with your USB connector? I use Nokia and Original cable and both are working great.

I ordered these (bundled as a pair) from ebay. Paid a silly 2.80 bucks. Just got them yesterday. I've got to say that these are much better than the stock cable. They fit snuggly in the micro usb port and the cable is so thin that it seems like it's not there

Charging and data transfer work for me :D

My original cable started playing up a few days after I got my pulse. Being in Australia I figured T-Mob wasn't going to honour the warranty (T-Mob don't operate in Australia), so I bought a pack of 10 on ebay for about $15AUD delivered (from China) and they all work fine. Most micro-usb cables sell for about $30 each here, so 10 for $15 isn't bad.

Thanks for posting this  I did read this post a few days ago but I didn't get a chance to reply.

That's strange. I bought 2 cables for 2 different Pulses and they both had a much better fit. Possibly you have a different Pulse (identified by the number of notches around the camera...I have 7)

Standard pulse. Anyway I accidentally bent the USB plug on my cable when I dropped my phone a week ago and since then it's been very very easy to remove. The USB port is completely undamaged. I checked the cable and the two little teeth on the metal bit have bent inside, so that's why it's loose.

If you can somehow break them off or push them in then the cables will be a lot looser and less wear on the USB socket.

Yes I noticed that the Blackberry cable doesn't have these teeth
