Guest DJHope Posted February 5, 2003 Report Posted February 5, 2003 *UPDATE* Ok now their probably some mistakes in this, please if you wouldnt mind have a look over it and tell me whats wrong! I need to credit lots of people for various pieces of infomation. The FAQ !
Guest Lojt Posted February 5, 2003 Report Posted February 5, 2003 Avantgo it software that downloads webpages to your device so you can view them offline (i think)
Guest Rob.P Posted February 5, 2003 Report Posted February 5, 2003 A very common and extremely useful app for PDA's, had it on my Jornada. You sign up for a free account and then select teh "channels" you'd like to add, then everytime you sync it downloads all the latest pages from your channels for viewing ^ offline.
Guest DJHope Posted February 5, 2003 Report Posted February 5, 2003 Thanks guys, i wanna stick it in the FAQ as alot of people ask about avantgo and why it isnt on smartphone!
Guest Bazz Posted February 5, 2003 Report Posted February 5, 2003 6-How do i send emails? Strangely you cannot send emails on your normal outgoing mail server so you need to use smtp.orange.net. Just thought I'd explain this - it isn't that strange at all. Most ISPs won't let you connect to their outgoing mail server unless you are on their network. Anyone using a mail server can be traced back to the user logged on to that network. This stops Spammers using their mail servers. As you are on the Orange network for GPRS the orange mail server works. I'm guessing that the orange mail server also will not work if you try this from your PC (unless you connect to Orange or Orange have made this mail server open for anyone - which is asking just for bother!). Just a little info in case you're interested, Barry
Guest DJHope Posted February 5, 2003 Report Posted February 5, 2003 Ok BAZZ i was going for K.I.S.S in the beginners section mate ;) I supose i could stick that in tho, cheers! Don't know how well ive done but that was the idea !
Guest HelloDave Posted February 5, 2003 Report Posted February 5, 2003 Nice one DJHope! OK, i'm going to be difficult now and add my $0.02 ;) A few more things you could add? (If you haven't thought of them already!) - A brief "How to encode videos section" (i.e. you need windows media encoder, and it won't encode DiVX's on its own) - Mention the advanced media player skin? - There is no picture call ID type app at the moment (that's at least 1 thread's worth a week!) - The phone can ring and vibrate at the same time, just set it to vibrate and ring - 2.5 to 3.5mm headphone adaptors are available from Maplin - The button on the headset answers calls but doesn't hang up - To make the phone completely silent turn the earpiece volume down fully. - There is no SMS counter, but 160 characters is approximately half way along the last line of the editor and the SPV will happily send 10 concatenated SMSs if you let it! I appreciate how difficult it must be to write a FAQ when you have many 1000s of posts to wade through, and you've done a great job so far!
Guest DJHope Posted February 5, 2003 Report Posted February 5, 2003 Thanks dave, you arnt being difficult mate since thats what i wanted! Coverting video will go in the tips and tricks section which i havnt even started yet (i didnt relaise just how big a job this was going to be!) Anyways thanks again, DJ Hope
Guest Bazz Posted February 5, 2003 Report Posted February 5, 2003 Ok BAZZ i was going for K.I.S.S in the beginners section mate ;) I supose i could stick that in tho, cheers! KISS? Keep It Stupidly Simple? I wouldn't bother sticking it in. Was just giving it for your info since you said strangely. Other niggles with some of you tips: 9 - Mobile Favourites in IE doesn't work on the SPV (I don't think) 13 - Perhaps mention that using the hang-up to lock also kills the GPRS connection. 19 - Mention that alarm only works when phone is on (seems obvious to me, but loads of people aren't used to this). 30 - You've made a typo and put ABC down twice. Other than that it looks pretty good. A bit biased against MS, but I'm sure they'll cope. Well done. Barry
Guest DJHope Posted February 5, 2003 Report Posted February 5, 2003 Bazz mate thanks for the info, not necissaraly biased against MS bit annoyed wiv Orange tbh, anyways ABC down twice, arg thats cause i converted it from a word document the second one was underlined, but just checked and that dosnt exsist anyways! Cheers mate, DJ hope
Guest DJHope Posted February 5, 2003 Report Posted February 5, 2003 Quick Question, what are the best options to get GPRS/WAP/Pass through to work all together flawlessly, i dont want the actual settings down to the last IP address just the bit before all that?
Guest Bazz Posted February 5, 2003 Report Posted February 5, 2003 I used these: http://www.bornsloppy.co.uk/fix.htm
Guest Will Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 Good work DJ, any help on home screen customisation/plugins I can pretty much answer anything now, including most of the foiballs! Foiballs is that spelt correctly  , like the iconbar can only be 20 pixels high, and the carrier plugin uses height-1 etc.. (might get a little complex, but PM me if you need info). Will
Guest vampyre69 Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 I dont mind writting a mac users section. Or tidying it up in a pdf for you also when I register my next website I'll be adding a subdomain dedicated to the SPV it will have loads of ring tones and pics etc so I dont mind hosting you FAQ there either. Let me know PM me. Regardez
Guest Matt Whitfield Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 DJHope, I just noticed that you go to Brunel. I finished doing Comp Sci there over 6 years ago - is it still as crap as I remember? And does this mean you go to the Academy???
Guest DJHope Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 Yeh its still a s*** hole mate, im in the systems engineering department, did you enjoy brunel? Take it easy, DJ Hope
Guest Matt Whitfield Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 Because it was so bad, and the place is full of such sad losers, I actually ended up making a lot of very good friends going to Brunel - basically all the sane people sought each other out and stuck together! Used to go clubbing a lot in London - jumping in taxis and heading down to Club UK (closed when I was still at uni) in Wandsworth used to be a favourite pastime on a Friday night. So although the campus and the courses are generally terrible, it actually worked out all right. I still can't forgive myself for the amount of time spent in the campus night club tho (it was called The Academy then, don't know if it is now?)...
Guest DJHope Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 Yeh its still called the academy theve just created this new degree called mobile phone technology which i really wanna do now, oh well! Yeh we go into london alot or spend time round at peoples houses. Hopefully off to turnmills or somewere this weekend! Don't forgive just TRY to forget, DJ Hope
Guest Matt Whitfield Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 Blimey, that's sounds like a bit of an up to date course for Brunel! Do you go to the WAP Wednesday events (www.wirelessaroundpeople.com)? They're very good if you're into wireless stuff... An ex-colleague of mine runs the Zurich chapter, and he introduced me to the founder, Grant. When they do them the pure techie events are really excellent, but the main thing is good too for keeping up to date with the wireless industry - a lot of very interesting people go to those events. Ah yes, Turnmills - went there for my b'day. It was blinding - quite literally! :-D
Guest DJHope Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 Im suposed to be looking for a placement for next year right now unfortunately the way my exams just went i wanna wait for those results first before i make any decisions about placements. If my exams are okay im really looking for something in mobile phone tech its all very exciting rite now. Ive always found mobile phones fairly boring up to the point of the SPV. DJ Hope
Guest Matt Whitfield Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 One guy from my course went to Orange in Bristol for his placement and I think he's still there. Another went to Nokia in Finland. The major mobile players seem to take quite a few placement studens, but I'd try to get in there early... I used to be focused on Web development doing big corporate sites, then wanted to get into Wireless but I think I was interested a bit too early on... so then I switched my attention to Interactive TV development, but I think there is always the chance of me going back to Wireless as the technology and networks advance, assuming the right opportunity came up...
Guest DJHope Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 See above for an Update to the FAQ.
Guest mudboy Posted February 7, 2003 Report Posted February 7, 2003 How do i send emails? Strangely you cannot send emails on your normal outgoing mail server so you need to use smtp.orange.net. This isn't true as I can send emails just fine through ntl's smtp server
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted February 8, 2003 Report Posted February 8, 2003 I've never been able to...
Guest Firaas Posted February 8, 2003 Report Posted February 8, 2003 Question 31, the URL should be http://www.bornsloppy.co.uk - .com's the one that CH4 did manage to register...
