Guest tommo123 Posted June 28, 2010 Report Posted June 28, 2010 when i first read about flashing etc, i assumed you rooted, put the rom on the SD, and then flashed the new rom - choosing to wipe the old in the process? is that right? (trying to work up the nerve to do it), if so (or if not), where does fake flash come in?
Guest Ellis Grouse Posted June 28, 2010 Report Posted June 28, 2010 Correct. The stock recovery that HTC include on our phones will not allow us to flash custom images - usually due to an invalid file signature or other error. Fake-flash is a custom recovery - started from the stock one - that allows us to flash updates that otherwise would not work.

Use this guide here for that: http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-desi...o-1-21-support/ Once the phone is rooted, you can flash any ROM to it. The 'old' method of doing that was to enter recovery mode by connecting the phone by cable to a computer and running a batch process from the computer. You could then flash a ROM from your SD card The 'fake-flash' method removes the need for the cable and the computer and is done via a Market app called ROM Manager. It is MUCH simpler to flash a ROM using this method so forget about the 'old' method. To fake-flash: 1) Download the ROM that you want to install and copy to your SD card (I put mine in a folder called 'ROMS') 2) Install the (free) ROM Manager from the market. 3) Run ROM Manager 4) Flash ClockworkMod Revovery from ROM Manager (to load the latest version of the 'fake'flash' script) 5) Choose 'Install ROM from SD card' 6) Select the option to backup (probably best to select 'wipe' as well) 7) Navigate to where your ROM is on your SD card 8) Select the ROM you want to install 9) Sit back and wait! For a 'first-time' new ROM, I recommend the 'r3.1 ROM with default MoDaCo additions and A2SD+' from here: http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-desi...online-kitchen/ There is also a paid version of ROM Manager. This allows you to select new ROMS directly from within the app, rather than downloading them and copying to SD card first. Hope this helps! The main advantage to me of going down this root is the ability to install apps to the SD card. This saves a huge amount of memory on the phone and allows a lot more apps to be installed. (You will need to partition your SD card before the first flash. Search modaco or xda-developers forums for how to do that).
Guest Time Sheep Posted June 28, 2010 Report Posted June 28, 2010 (edited) How I've understood it, fake-flash is a custom recovery image. Makes you able to flash roms without having the phone plugged into a pc. It's also a lot easier than RUU. Copy the ROM over (You don't even have to rename it) Restart the phone in recovery mode (Should start fake-flash image if installed correctly) and press update from zip file. Then you choose the ROM and it updates :D Ofc you still have to wipe the phone before installing new roms. Though some ROMs are just "updates" so you won't have to wipe. In case you don't have to wipe, it's usually stated in the release topic  EDIT: What the **** is ROM manager? I just bake a ROM from my phone, download, restart, flash :D Edited June 28, 2010 by Time Sheep
