Assign SMS tone to contact

Hi,

Probably being stupid here but how can I assign a specific tone to a contact for SMS? I know how to assign a ringtone but not SMS?

Get SMS Popup from the market, disable the inbuilt SMS notifications and enable those inside SMS Popup. You can do per-contact notifications with that app and the popup itself is useful (but can be disabled). Another option is Handcent SMS, which is a full, very customisable SMS app replacement.
