Guest JohnPorter Posted June 28, 2010 Report Posted June 28, 2010 I've had my Pulse for around 2 months now and I'm over the "i have a new phone let's have a play etc", you know the period when you can't stop playing with it. Now I don't play with it as much I've noticed how appauling the battery life is on this phone. I've turned off 3G Access, WiFi, screen brightness set 50%, screen timeout is set 30 Secs, so to me it's just like a basic phone. But it's lasts no longer that a day. I charged the phone on Tuesday last week, had 1 call and made 1 call and the phone was ready for another charge, this can't be right by any means? I have since changed back to my Tocco Lite and been using that for the past four days and it isn't even near ready for another charge as yet! I've contact T-Mobile who are sending me a replacement battery to try, if that fails then I have to take the phone into a shop for a repair. T-mobile has also said because it's been 2 months after I got the phone that I can't change it, is that correct?

Most smart phones only last a day and you maybe able to get 2 days out of it if you disable data, sync etc. But most modern smart phones only last a day. Put it this way, the battery life is good if it can get you from morning to night without needing a charge in-between Installing a 2.1 custom rom will increase battery life Edited June 28, 2010 by Azurren
Guest JohnPorter Posted June 28, 2010 Report Posted June 28, 2010 So your saying this is normal? A phone that is a little over a year old, and has almost identical functionality except for the WiFi can out last one of the latest phones by days? I find that hard to believe, the phone is in standby most of the time......data services/3G turned off, wifi disabled..doesn't improve battery life?

With everything turned off, minimal use On the 1.5 custom vanilla rom my phone can last a full 24 hours and a bit before dieing. With the FLB 2.1 custom rom my phone can last a day and a half - 2 days before dieing. Just to put it into perspective, the G1 can barely last a day on stock firmware and the Nexus / desire / samsung galaxy s also last a day of normal use. Same with the iPhone 3gs (Although the iPhone 4 is supposed to have improved battery life?)

Same with the iPhone 3gs (Although the iPhone 4 is supposed to have improved battery life?) I get about 40 hours out of mine. Moderate use: data on (3g), wifi off, brightness ~30 %, some surfing ~ 15 min/day, 15-20 texts/day, calls ~10min/day. WIP Paul's rom
Guest Totyasrác Posted June 28, 2010 Report Posted June 28, 2010 (edited) Last weekend I've been abroad -> activated APNDroid*. I was amazed that after 80 hours I still had 40% off the battery... Well, didn't use it much, bluetooth was on, made ~1-2 short calls a day... Anyways, surprising but true. (Was using 2.1/FLB beta3 ROM ) *: Didn't wanna get into data roaming issues :D Edited June 28, 2010 by Totyasrác

Guest Posted June 28, 2010 Report Posted June 28, 2010 I'm trying to save as much battery on the phone as possible right now, I've turned the screen brightness down to the lowest, turned off 3G and syncing, turned off wifi, and etc. I am doing this because I need the battery to last a four day festival I'm going to on Wednesday. It's been around 12 hours since I pulled put the charger and it's still a bit over 90% remaining, if I turn the phone off when (if ) I'm going to sleep at the festival it should last. It'll be as usefull as a Nokia 3310, but at least it will last. :D

I've tried using the Pulse as a "phone" few calls and texts a day data, wifi and gps off. Battery lasted for 5 days. Batter life is great if u use it as a phone, the pocket PC part drains the battery. Example: Unplugged the phone from charger at 11AM, made three 2 min. calls, it's 11.30PM now and battery is still at 100%. I usually charge the phone over night for about 10h.
Guest Azurren Posted June 29, 2010 Report Posted June 29, 2010 I would never trust not charging my phone for 4 days.. What if you get lost and have to find your way to that all important meeting? Or if you get diverted off the motorway and you start pulling your hair out? If you charge every day then you can load-up a google search, find what you want, turn on the navigation and your home free. With the set-ups your talking about on the 2nd / 3rd day if you turned that on the phone would be dead in less than an hour (Battery life has a nice habit of displaying how much it has left if you continue using it like you are. Start using it heavily and you could lose 30% in a second)

Guest tgomas Posted June 29, 2010 Report Posted June 29, 2010 Mine has been up for 2 days 2 hours unplugged, browsing news/weather/email. I generally leave it on 2g data but it has been on 3g data all night. This is with FLB 2.1 rom, vey happy with my battery life.
Guest JohnPorter Posted June 29, 2010 Report Posted June 29, 2010 Ok, when the new battery arrives I may give the FLB-ROM a shot.....

Guest RayT Posted June 29, 2010 Report Posted June 29, 2010 FWIW, I used to get barely a day from the stock 1.5 ROM, so I was very pleasantly surprised to be getting 2-3 days out of my Pulse now I have changed to the FLB 2.1 ROM. The process is a little fraught at first, but the results *far* outweigh the scariness. just remember to back up everything and sync your contacts before you start. Oh, another thing - Auto Task Killers and the like also Kill Battery life.... you don't need them. RayT

RayT I used to have 2.1 on my pulse but went back to stock 1.5 using the method somewhere on this forum. My Pulse is on charge tonight and I intend to put FLB-Mod on it and see how it goes. I'm ok with doing updates etc. But thanks for the tips. I like the Pulse as a phone and Android as the OS but not sure why, but I'm changing my mind about getting another Android Phone when my contract is up for renewal in 22 months. Been looking round and if I had the cash, I'd invest in a Nokia E71/E72. But I'm gonna wait, Nokia are fetching some interesting phones to market soon....

Do research on any possible replacement phone. Remember the android market is only going to get bigger and better. Nokia (and the likes) is trailing behind now and I predict it will trail even further behind in the future :D Plus like I said. As far as I know every smartphones battery only last a day with the exception of the iPhone 4.. This WILL change as I'm sure the likes of HTC will be pushing battery life to compete with their next gen android phones
