Cramping out all the speed I can / Camping with max battery

Hey all,

been out of the game for awhile, last time I checked it was recommended to use compcache for speed etc.

Since 2.1 ROM's are popping out like crazy now I was just wondering what the fastest setup for speed is these days?

I've just read some the last days, and is Apps2SD+ (I think its +, the one with dalvik on SD...?) and overclocking the only real options these days?

Are there any speed vs. battery-comparissons available for OC?

Swap on SD and compcache is pretty dead I guess?

Running a Hero currently with VanillaEclair and a class6 16gb SD-card but I'm going back to MCR soon!

Also,

I'm going camping in a couple of weeks, and therefore I need a ROM with the maximum amount of battery power.

I'm not expecting it to run for a week, most likely I will only turn it on if I'm unsure about my position and for nightly entertainment.

I'm guessing I need to turn off all data-connections and syncing, turn brigthness all the way down and basically uninstall all the apps I dont need?

Is there something more I can do?

Will apps2sd or anything else change the batterytime?

Are there any ROM's that specialize in batterylife?

I need to have a working GPS, Latitude and data connection.

A task-manager set on auto-kill should save some juice. I recommend this.

I got taskkiller already, guess it will do the same job.

If you are using VanillaEclair 4.0 or any AOSP 2.1 these tend to be based on Cyanogen 5.0.7(8) which has the option for Compcache to be switched on, usually recommended if you have a lot of apps i.e 100+ and A2SD.

A2SD+ seems to be a feature offered for Sense ROMS, IMHO, but the jury is still out on it benefits or implementation (just read the forums for the problems with A2SD+)

The name of the game seems to be Kernels as DEVS have been able to get better battery AND performance by setting optimal CPU speeds.

I too have been with VanillaEclair 4.0 for a while now, no complaints and great battery life coupled with great performance :D

EDIT: Have a look at the XDA's Wiki for a list of customs ROMS for GSM Hero or here for even more examples

There no speedup with compcache if I have, say 15 apps?

I reflashed with app2sd (not apps2sd+), swap, set taskkiller to kill on screen off and installed juicedefender.

Seems to have increased my batterylife and performance pretty much :-)

Still testing though, will report back...
