According to Arc Technica the next version of Android (due Q4 2010) will be christened "Android 3.0" and will have some significant increases in minimum spec:

  • 1Ghz Processor
  • 512MB Memory
  • 3.5+ inch screen

So this is the point where the Android 2.2 and next generation Android designs part company, the lower spec staying around for low end devices. Given the focus that will exist on the wizz-bang new designs, and the lower capabilities of the Pulse - we can see 2.2 being the last upgrade to the phone. Once that is working with stability its not going to progress beyond maintenance tweaks.

1 year certainly is a long time in mobile phones.

I would be satisfied with a good 2.2 port on pulse. I'll switch to android 3.x after my contract expire. I hope by that time the phones specified above will be the middle category, so I can buy one.

The solution is to buy another 3 pulses and merge them 2gether, to give you super pulse with 2ghz processor, 768mb ram and a 7 inch screen. Sorted =)

Good point!

Who's gonna order them?

I want 6 please, 2GHz aren't enough for me

I think 6 would be a problem with the screens. I think you would need either 1 or 4 or 16 etc otherwise the screen ratio gets screwed up.

Also, I dont think ordering them will be the problem, it will be in merging them together to create a working thing with 4 screens glued 2gether...

Hmm I see you're right =/

We'll definitely need some super-glue...

Yeah, I'm sure that there will be a 2.3 or so.

Froyo seems to focus on improving speed and performance, it may have also been designed to help devices like ours reach 2.x It is possible that perhaps they will improve on froyo to help the older devices.

If 3.0 requires a 1ghz processor then that doesn't look good for the likes of the nexus 1 and all other high end smart phones. Doesn't give much room for leeway :S

2 things. Firstly there cant be anonther 2.x becuase 3.0 is ginger bread so there cant be anything inbetween froyo and gingerbread unless they did 2.2.1.

Secondly, qualcomm have developed 1.5ghz dual core processors for phones, so the next high end devices wont have a problem =), they will just be epicly expensive

No. I'll be putting all the innards from the pulses in the monitor. All the people who have iPads will be envious of my creation :D
