Hi, I've just purchased a Nexus One off of Ebay. However it is locked to Vodafone and I am with O2. Will rooting unlock this? or do I need to put a custom ROM on there too? Or is there a specific unlock procedure once rooted?

Thanks

check the sticky topic in this forum regarding unlocking any HTC device instantly for $20. Rooting and custom ROM's have nothing to do with the carrier subsidy locks.

or just go to the unlocking site directly

No Nexus ones are supposed to be carrier-locked. Have you tried putting an O2 SIM in?

Well since Vodaphone is offering it for free on a contract it is probably carrier locked

"Vodafone is the first European mobile operator to offer Nexus One. Customers who pre-order online will be the first to get a Nexus One for free on a £35 monthly price plan (24 month), on April 30."

My colleague has a Vodafone Nexus One (UK) and it's not SIM/Network locked.

Sorry to divert the thread a little, but does anyone know what happens to your OTA updates if you've got a Voda N1 but you're on a different network? I assume I'm going to be treated as a "Vodafone customer" for these purposes, right?

From what I understand, OTA updates don't really come from the carrier. The phone checks with Google's update servers over the Internet, no matter what method you use to connect to the Internet.

Bit wrong here, if the handset is operator branded, say Vodafone you will not receive OTA unless VDF complete full cycle of testing on their branded FroYo SW.

That means, once source code is released to OEM's VDF will start testing their branded SW and after SW is approved it will be pushed OTA

However, if you root and change the SW to vanilla, you should get OTA once Google push it... actually already pushed

root does not = unlock from carrier. they have nothing to do with each other. it's not hard to unlock a phone, some people/companies do this for a small fee, at least stateside. can't imagine it's much different there.

untrue. the option was available to buy the N1 carrier locked, just not directly FROM the carrier.

The Device will not be Locked.

Vodafone tests the ROMs before release but this is all they can do. Google supposedly makes changes to the Euro ROMs, emergency calling and other odd bits (see Googles blog).

The N1 bought through Vodafone in the EU will not be sim locked (i got one) unlike T-Mob and AT&T in the US. However, there is an option in the bootloader that says Simlock (i'm to chicken to play with it)

Lee, Let us know when it arrives.
