Guest Edgeyyy Posted July 1, 2010 Report Posted July 1, 2010 Hey, The dell streak has 512mb ram and a 1ghz processor.. technically powerful enough to run windows xp or linux. Would it be at all possible to put either on the device? Cheers, Edgey
Guest popetodd Posted July 1, 2010 Report Posted July 1, 2010 (edited) Linux for sure, Android is a Linux kernel. The obstacles are hardware related, there's quite a bit of kit on this device that would need drivers written for it. As Android is Linux (well, a variant of it at least) it's quite possible to port over some of these drivers assuming that you have access to the source, and that may prove to be an issue. A lot of the hardware is proprietary and getting the driver source from the manufacturers may prove to be extremely difficult. Same for XP/7, it's all about the drivers. Guest JimiB Posted July 1, 2010 Report Posted July 1, 2010 I don't see why it wouldn't be possible... There should be an alpha release of meego available soon for mobiles/portable devices There was a story on engadget recently showing it running on a touchscreen phone, you might hit an issue as its built on an intel architecture. Could try maemo but I'm not sure of the architecture again. I'd go linux over windows any day of the week  -Jimi
Guest jdouce Posted July 1, 2010 Report Posted July 1, 2010 dell still havent relesed the source code i think
Guest rovex Posted July 1, 2010 Report Posted July 1, 2010 XP? Not a chance in hell, unless in an emulator. XP was never compiled for ARM CPUs so it wont every work natively.
Guest Edgeyyy Posted July 1, 2010 Report Posted July 1, 2010 http://i.downloadsquad.com/2009/02/25/inst...android-phones/ Found this that might be of interest to others. Does android have any emulator apps for such use?
Guest courtlandre Posted July 1, 2010 Report Posted July 1, 2010 The 1ghz processor in our phones is very different than a 1ghz processor in a laptop. While the clock speeds may sound the same, laptop processors are quite a bit more powerful.
Guest maxdakota123 Posted July 2, 2010 Report Posted July 2, 2010 Well, in the previous generation, the majority of mobile processors didn't offer the higher end power, that desktop processors had. So, they were implement into notebooks, at the expense of battery life. However, now mobile processor have become very powerful, and there is little point in putting a desktop processor into a notebook.

But you will not get Windows XP to run (why anyone would want to is another question) because Windows is built for the x86 Architecture. XP really isn't designed for touch screens either. The nearest would probably be Windows CE but that was such a pile of steaming poo I wouldn't bother even trying and you have to *buy* it. It is closed source and proprietary. What is wrong with Android? It's Open, Free, very customisable and incredibly popular. Meego would be an interesting choice to play with but that isn't ready for prime time just yet.

Actually you would be able to straight pull the kernel from the ROM and replace the Debian ARM release stock kernel and boot it, with no actual porting. Having a working X windows and support for the touch interface is whole different thing
