Guest itachi46 Posted July 5, 2010 Report Posted July 5, 2010 hi there fairly new to the android community.. i have a rooted phone runing r3.1 if i decide to flash another rom on.. will i lose data? also i somewhat fluked the flashing of the rom the first time i used rom manager and simply selected the zip file and when it rebooted i picked to install from the zip file and it all worked i read a few tutorials which said to rename it to update and run that instead? did i do somthing wrong? *i have tried to use the search button but didnt find the answer i was looking for.. thank you :)
Guest spammyspam Posted July 5, 2010 Report Posted July 5, 2010 Flashing a ROM itself won't erase the data on your phone, you have to do it yourself (factory reset). The general consensus here is that you can keep your data if moving between ROMs based on the same version (2.1) but Froyo etc may need a full wipe since the data itself may be more than a little incompatible. YMMV. Custom recoveries can flash any zip named anything held in any location. I'm guessing ROM Manager selected the right thing for you.
Guest NarutoDKz Posted July 5, 2010 Report Posted July 5, 2010 (edited) You did it the right way. Yes you will lose data when you shift to a different rom. (If you wipe it) But you could make a nandroid backup of the one you have now so that you can always go back to what you have know WITH all data. (Using Rom Manager) Or you could make a backup of what you want saved by using titanium backup. Hope this helps :) Edited July 5, 2010 by NarutoDKz

Guest spammyspam Posted July 5, 2010 Report Posted July 5, 2010 (edited) >so if i wanted to apply a mod to my current rom do i need to rename the zip to an update.zip? No, because "Custom recoveries can flash any zip named anything held in any location." :). Only the stock recovery requires an "update.zip". I have a folder of roms/mods etc all with meaningful names which I flash directly. And since I'm using fake-flash, I can't replace update.zip used for that anyway. Edited July 5, 2010 by spammyspam
