Google Mail app closing

Ok, since yesterday whenever I try to open my gmail app it just closes - not even force closes, just flashes open to a grey screen with "Google Mail" at the top then disappears completely. Tried the following so far:

* Restored to a nandroid backup of when I'm pretty certain it was working, same behaviour.

* Wipe, reinstall rom, restore settings from sd gives same behaviour.

* Wiping, reinstalling and not restoring settings gave me the setup screen to register/add a gmail account when attempting to launch the app.

Using MCR 3.1 with a2sd. Have been fiddling around with froyo roms recently and doing lots of flashing/restoring, dunno if that could have caused it.

Tried 2 different nandroid backups though, one quite old where I'm certain it was working, and another fairly new one which I'm also sure was still working but can't be sure...

Don't really know how to debug or see what's going on in the phone when this happens, so any help at all would be appreciated >.<
