Guest Browell2664 Posted July 8, 2010 Report Posted July 8, 2010 Hi all, new here Recently upgraded to the Steak through 02, within 20 days of having it, the screen lock/power off began to play up, and the screen casing was coming away from the 5" screen. I sent it back to 02 and got a direct swap for a brand new streak at my front door, i think this is good customer service from 02. My question is, has anoyone experienced any problems with their Streak since purchase? My 2nd streak is perfect though no faults, and rooted now(although im in need of some slight education on how to take the device to it's full potential) Thanx ~Rob
Guest mobiholic Posted July 8, 2010 Report Posted July 8, 2010 (edited) I have had 2 Streaks from O2 and both had the casing coming away from the screen, specifically the top or earpiece area. I also had a scratch on the display of the first one which could be described as unused given the way I handled it. The scratch wasn't there when I bought it though so despite my very careful handling and the claims about gorilla glass I somehow damaged it. So, somehow I managed to damage a display made of gorilla glass even though I never pocketed it, placed it face down, let my wife or daughter touch ( :D ) it, took it out the house, owned it for less than 5 days, placed anything on top of it, etc etc etc. :) I believe that my experience isn't indicative of the general Streak build quality, after all most people who own one will have no reason to post or comment about the Streak, it's generally those who are experiencing problems that are the most vocal. In addition no handset is problem free, especially at release so if you can I would stick with it if you've found a good one. With that said, since both my units were faulty and although I know mine is probably an isolated case I decided not to get a third replacement. For now I am happy to sit and wait while the hardware matures and the software receives the expected updates and then I will grab a new one from direct from Dell. Had my second unit been trouble free then it would be a different story. :P EDIT: oh and the straight swap for new on O2 works like this - if you've had it for less than 14 days they'll replace it, if you've had it for longer then they will instead attempt to repair it assuming it is a fault and not damage you have caused. That is the info I received from O2 when I inquired. Edited July 8, 2010 by mobiholic

That is the info I received from O2 when I inquired. I believe my first device was a faulty one, it is expected in the piliminary stages of development with a product coming out for the first time. I don't mind the minor inconveinience (bad spelling) caused. 02 have given me a straight swap, i was impressed with this, rang on the saturday and recieved the swap on the monday. It must have been within a 14 day period, i can't remember delivery date. I really like this device and will stick with it. What do you mean about a straight swap with dell? They surely won't simply say "Anyone with streak running 1.6, send back to dell and we'll give you a new 2.2 (froyo) streak."

I've already returned mine and cancelled the contract so I don't own a streak at the mo. When Dell starts selling the streak with 2.2 or later then I will buy a new unit direct from them.
Guest Dunhamzzz Posted July 8, 2010 Report Posted July 8, 2010 A lot of people have exchanged their Streaks. Some even twice. Mine had a dead pixel.

Guest THJahar Posted July 8, 2010 Report Posted July 8, 2010 All products have a specific failure rate. The xbox had a failure rate if well over 20%. most phones have a failure rate of between 2% up to 10%. You'll notice when a phone has a specifically high failure rate as the 'my phone don't work derpa derpa derpa' posts increase exponentially. From what I gather The Dell Streak is a well made phone and has a low return rate but of course some people will have a phone that fails, it's unfortunate, but like Browell did, he just returned his phone and got a replacement and wasn't overly annoyed, because sometime you just get unlucky and find yourself with that x% phone.

Yeh, stuff like this happens all the time, can't point fingers really. Especially with how great the service was i experienced, it made up for the little malfunction. I glad to report this. (my second streak) has had no problems at all apart from a few force close probably due to me running rooted use with CPU right down. Best phone i've owned
Guest HOkay Posted July 20, 2010 Report Posted July 20, 2010 Just wanted to throw in a quick note to say I've only had my Streak a week but it's seemingly of very decent build quality, no bits falling off & the gorilla glass seems vastly superior to all the other phones I've played with lately. I was going to buy a Motorola Milestone...boy am I glad I waited & got one of these instead!

I was going to buy a Motorola Milestone...boy am I glad I waited & got one of these instead! might be worth having a poll on this, mine is still doing fine considering its had quite a few greasy mitts on it, it gets tapped and prodded without worry. i reckon having insurance makes me more relaxed about it ever dying lol ill get a case sometime for now it can stay naked or slip into the pouch which i mainly use as a cleaning cloth lol

Guest Strakerr3 Posted July 21, 2010 Report Posted July 21, 2010 (edited) Dropped my streak 3 times unfortunately.... I'm clumsy as hell >_<!.. Absoluetly no visible damage.. two of the drops were onto the pavement in the street. So on that note i honestly have no problem with the build quality most phones wouldn't stand up to the beating my poor streak has taken :D. I'm 6ft3 tall. and the phone both times was in transit from my inside jacket pocket to my ear. so the drop must have been atleast 5ft to the ground onto concrete. Bluddy suprised its not broken ;)!!! hopefully i won't give it a reason to break on me after this post =] Edited July 21, 2010 by Strakerr3
Guest mobiholic Posted July 21, 2010 Report Posted July 21, 2010 (edited) My main concerns about the build quality of the streak are the way the plastic is stuck down on either end of the screen and how much pressure is on the LCD beneath the protective gorilla glass. I worry that the double sided tape wont last and 6 months down the road we'll all be complaining of loose and creaking plastic where it is coming unstuck. Regarding the pressure on the LCD, there really is no point using Gorilla glass if any force applied to it is going to be transferred directly to the LCD below anyway. If anything as we have seen the Gorilla glass on top will survive but because it transfers the force of an impact to the LCD the LCD will suffer ie break. On both the Streaks I had the LCD would ripple when I pressed on the glass around the edges and as the reviewer mentioned in the engadget US review this is a potential problem. On my Galaxy S pressing on the Glass hard produces no distortion of the screen at all, because the glass does not transfer the pressure to the display and this is the way it should be on the Streak if the Gorilla glass is expected to provide any protection to the LCD underneath. I remain hopeful that I'm just being pessimistic about these two areas of the Streak but based on my own experience and the chatter about the Streak on forums like this one it looks as though my concerns are not unrealistic. Guest HOkay Posted July 23, 2010 Report Posted July 23, 2010 I take it everyone has seen this? http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/29/dell-st...-for-your-amus/ I realise that this is essentially the best case scenario and what the gorilla glass is designed to do, which begs the question what about the edges as mobiholic pointed out. Though you've gota have some bad luck if you drop it and something hits the thin strip where real damage can happen. Luckily, keeping my streak in my jeans means it'll never come out of its own accord, it's far too snug for that :( !

Though you've gota have some bad luck if you drop it and something hits the thin strip where real damage can happen. Luckily, keeping my streak in my jeans means it'll never come out of its own accord, it's far too snug for that :( ! The problem with the outer glass being forced hard upon the corners of the LCD glass is that there is no forgiveness when the case is bent, twisted or stressed - and the 9.9mm thin case offers little protection against those kind of forces. As mobiholic has illustrated, even a slight pressure on the corners causes severe distorting of the LCD (try pinching the corners lightly whilst in the dark grey bootup screen - but do it carefully!). Hence the last place I would want the Streak to be would be in a tight jeans pocket as it could subject it to just the wrong kind of twisting & bending stress when sitting down or going up stairs etc. Also the close bonding of two large surface areas makes me wonder if temperature changes and different rates of expansion could contribute to a fracture (e.g. in Paul's case where all he did was pick the thing up off his desk). Interesting to see how this goes down come the imminent widespread US release - or if the hardware "mods" touched on in the Dell tweets include improvements to the LCD panel mounting (I guess they would have had enough warranty returns from UK guinea pigs to know there was a problem - and US class actions from disgruntled punters over inherent product faults can be expensive and damaging to face - as Dell know from their PCs!). Guest deekarma Posted July 25, 2010 Report Posted July 25, 2010 Having to send mine off via O2 for repair. The port for the power cable/USB is bust - goddam you Dell - it wouldnt have happened with a micro usb port. Have tried with a different battery and a different charger, but no joy. The guys in the O2 shop kindly charged up my battery so I could bring the phone back home to back it up and remove all data. I have rooted the phone and a bit concerned that they will use that as a way of getting out of repair. I also had this trouble with a phone in the past and they claimed that it wasn't covered by warranty and must have been the result of user damage. That was Vodafone, hoping that O2/Dell are more reasonable. Going to look into how you reverse rooting, but I think I am screwed given the USB doesn't work. Does anyone know of a good way to backup an image of the phone, apps etc to the SD card?
