Is 2.1 for me?

My pulse has the 1.5 Modaco custom ROM, and until now I've been happy enough living with the odd glitch. However, recently Handcent has started playing up with force closes and no text notifications, plus the laginess around using the phone has got slightly worse.

I tried removing Handcent and reinstalling, but no improvement. I've no serious apps on the phone, just Open home, Handcent, Opera and Dolphin.

I'm now wondering if I should upgrade to the Hungarian 2.1 and the FLB custom ROM? Given some of the problems mentioned on some of the 2.1 threads, am I likely to have a phone that's even more unstable than it currently is?

And do text's (Vodafone) really not work on phone's with the 2.1 ROM?

Any advice welcome:)

On the whole the 2.1 ROMs works fine. The official HU upgrade is also ok. There are not many FC and all ROMs are clearly faster than the old 1.5. But the SMS bug is really annoying for me. I don't need a phone which can't reliable receive and send SMS.

I hope the Tre upgrade has fixed this issue, but I don't know.

You can just try one of the 2.1 roms and return to 1.5 if you want. That works fine with the time machine patch. There is no risk for you :).

For me 2.1 is so much better than 1.5, I get almost no FC's compared to before and it is overall much faster and better looking

This is an error which occurs sometimes and you don't know when. That's the main problem with this bug.

I have used the 2.1 rom since launch (Hungarian - Occillation - FLB). I usually get a FC when I boot the phone but I just click "wait" and it sorts itself out. The SMS bug has happened to me once (GF wasn't happy lol). But other than that never had any issues. Currently using the latest FLB rom and I would highly recommend 2.1 instead of 1.5.

Thanks Martin (or is it Sadie :) ) I might give it a go then. Are you running 2 custom ROM's? how does that work then?

Can anyone confirm that they're on the Vodafone network and texts work (most of the time) and how about pic messages - I remember it took some time to find a fix when I first set up my Pulse.

I don't recommend 2.1 because of the sms problems.

You should see it like this:

1.5 = Reliable phone without fc's/reboots and you can trust your messages will be sent and you will recieve them.

2.1 = Your phone will reboot or have force closes at random times, usually not a good time and you don't know wheter the messages you send will be recieved or not.

It's not hard to choose between that, although 2.1 has some nice feature's and stuff I still recommend 1.5.

I'm using the 1.5 rom from MoDaCo and I'm happy with it.

There was a Metamorph thread ages back, but I don't think live wallpapers are possible...

No reboots and force closes, that used to happen on the unofficial beta 2.1 roms installed on top of 1.5 firmware. Now on the FLB mod everything works like a charm, plus it's waaaaay faster than 1.5. Cheers!

agreed, flb is strikingly stable, vibrate works for me, and text message receiving is fine, to the best of my knowledge.

The Swedish 2.1 ROM is completely stable - 10 days now and not a single force close or reboot, the battery life is amazing and I have had no problems sending or receiving SMS. In it SO good it is a complete revelation. I use to think my Pulse was fine......for £100.......when I was running a 1.5 ROM. I now think the phone is really cool - its responsive, smooth, the battery life is good and it looks cool. Upgrade to the Swedish 2.1 today - you won't regret it.

The Swedish Tre update has been the most stable update so far. No FC, no reboots the system runs smoothly, overall it has re-vamped my Pulse :)

If you are looking to upgrade I'd recommend to do so immediately, however if you don't want to re-flash every week (to test new roms out), wait a couple of more days, flibblesan should be releasing his amazing mod based on this rom, which has quite a few fixes.

I'm on 2.1 using FLB-MOD and I have to say it's running quite well. I've had one freeze in about 2 weeks. No problems with SMS either.

I've been using the Pulse since Oct 2009 and have no complains so far. That is why I did not even bother installing the December update or any custom ROMs. Question to those who find 1.5 slow: guys, what exactly is slow for you?

I'm not a perfectionist and there are only two issues that I'd like to tackle:

  1. Network unlock: can this be done for free? (e.g. by installing a custom ROM)
  2. Is 2.1 any better in terms of battery life?

Thanks in advance and forgive my ignorance :)
