Come on, we can treat fellow ad-free members better than that. Look beyond the caps, see the person inside. :-P

Can you explain this Galaxy S? If it's another phone, what features does it have that would entice a developer to go investigate? If it's another operating system, what do you know about it?

hmm where have you been the past month?

Remember how the Evo 4G was the greatest Android phone to kill them all? And now the Motorola Droid X? Well in between, we had the Samsung Galaxy S... another Android phone from Samsung. Easy to find info about it since so many blogs and sites talked about it.

As helpful as bashing posts are - wrong ones that are done without research aren't any more helpful.

The Samsung Galaxy S runs a Android UI overlay called Touch Wiz. The Touch Wiz UI used on the Galaxy S has been ported over to the nexus one quite successfully by a one rolle3k.

Check out the coverage on PocketNow

or to the thread on XDA itself

I'm not going to be quick and just shoot down the possibility of a Galaxy S to Nexus One port, but I think it's definitely going to be a niche group of people that would want the Samsung incarnation of Android. I'm guessing HTC-to-HTC ports are easier, but the again, I'm not a developer. What's enticing about the Galaxy S UI? Haven't messed around with it yet. I've used non-touchscreen Samsung phones in the past and hated their OS/UI experience. Maybe they've improved. Who knows? Anyone here use the Galaxy S yet?

i used it. it's not horrible. very clean. but as you say, very niche. so what's the chances of someone modding it if only a few people install it on their N1's? probably none. presumably once the galaxy line comes out, there'll be theming galore on XDA, but will those port right over? nope. so again, what's the point?

Touchwiz on the Galaxy S isnt that good, and was the first thing I ditched when my GS arrived last week. Basically Touchwiz is Samsungs own version of Launcher.

I installed Launcher Pro Beta and got rid of Touchwiz first. I have to admit tho, comparing the GS to my N1, the GS is friggn quick with Eclair vs N1 on Froyo - but I'm sure this is just CPU based. Samsungs coretex A8 variant does a wonderful job.

The GS does divx well BTW, and geez that screen!

Still love my N1 tho.. I really miss the trackball and led notifications on the GS....

Where do you notice your GS being faster than your N1? Maybe the GS's better GPU makes it handle the flashiness of Eclair better? That's the only thing I can see making a difference, the cpus are very similar.

i thought that both processors were significantly different in favor of the GS's cpu :)

LOL you're jokin right?? Time to do some Googling!!

The Snapdragon is not based on the Coretex A8 architecture, where as the Apple iPhone 4 and Galaxy S are. The only thing the N1's Snapdragon has going for it is the 1Ghz. Its also not very good at decoding Divx, which is why Samsung have been able to provide a video player that supports divx in the Galaxy S. The Hummingbird CPU just eats it.

No not quite. The reason the Galaxy S rapes anything in gaming is because of its PowerVR SGX540 GPU which has twice the performance of the SGX530 found in the Droid, according to Wiki. The Snapdragon has a CPU similar to the Cortex-A8 and the Adreno GPU. The Adreno GPU is a little less powerful than the Droid's SGX530 and thus the Galaxy S's GSX540 is more than twice as powerful as the Adreno.

You're confusing two things, CPU and GPU. The Snapdragon and Hummingbird have similar CPUs and dissimilar GPUs. So the performance increase of the Galaxy S has to be attributed mainly to its highly superior GPU and not its CPU.

Edit: So technically, the Snapdragon's cpu isn't based on the Cortex-A8...but it's very similar to it. So to say it's based on the Cortex-A8 isn't a stretch. There's no point in excluding the Snapdragon from the Cortex-A8 family as they have similar performance as seen by comparing the Droid to the Nexus.

Thank you for saying something - nothing is more painful than seeing people passing off bad info.

To read more about the differences in the Snapdragon chipset and the Hummingbird check out the Pocketnow article that goes into great detail about the development and differences in the chips.
