Problems with flash recovery/custom ROM

I am trying to install a custom ROM to get my Hero to Android 2.1. I followed the instructions at the Unlockr.com to root the phone and everything seemed to work. I had no error messages so I presume it worked.

Then I went to flash a recovery image. The first time I got an out of memory error for several lines. I was told I needed a newer recovery image so I found one and it worked. But when I loaded the ROM and tried to get into recovery mode (power + home) it would just hang on the HTC logo.

Someone on the HTC forum thought it may not be rooted properly, so I tried it again. I got the same result, so either it worked or it didn't and I don't know it. This time when I tried to flash a recovery image I got the same error about out of memory, but with the newer image. I also tried to use a couple of apks to do a one click flash and they tell me they can't be installed on the phone.

I would really like to get to Android 2.1 and so would my wife with her Hero. I have never done this before so I may be missing something. Any thoughts or help please?

Nevermind, I went back and found a different recovery image and it finally worked. I was able to upload a rom and it loaded and everything finally seems to be working. Sorry about that.
