Just upgraded from Hero to Desire

Hi,

I've just bought a Desire to replace my Hero on Orange. Got it this morning, been charging it for about an hour and a half now.

I'm loving the phone, but it's FILLED with all the orange branded crap, all the trial programs like TrafficTV and Tetris and even monopoly :/

I've downloaded Uninstaller off the market, hoping I would be able to remove it all.. but I can't :)

I'm looking into rooting it, I used to flash my HTC Touch but I didn't touch my Hero because I thought it was perfect.

Any help or suggestions would be amazing

cheers

Rooting is your best bet - follow the guide on here and you shouldn't go wrong. The stock Desire FW is awesome as it is but some of the custom ROMs are another level...seriously good ROMs out there!!

If you'd been on stock generic FW from the off I'd have said just take a minute to get used to it but the Orange FW is (apparently) useless so get rid of it!!

Something to bare in mind, though...some of the newer radios can lock the phone out so be careful before doing anything

My OH had an Orange branded phone filled with all that shiz.. best thing to do is root it and put some nice Custom stuff on there - As the guy above mentioned updating the radio may 'network lock' your phone - as scary as it sounds, you can just get an unlock code from ebay for £9 and that will allow you to run newer (and better radios), and also will allow you to use other SIM cards in your phone too!

The rooting process is a LOT easier now so no real reason NOT to do it! :)

Hi, thanks for the replies!

It's all just bloatware, all the stuff i will NEVER use. Its soo annoying.

I think i will root it. I know its cheeky, but if you rooted, what rom did you use? I remeber flashing my touch hd, nerve racking times. It is safer now? I havent looked at any of the forums, i think its time too!

Im in love with the desire. Really glad i chose it over the iPhone.!

I actually think flashing WinMo ROMs is easier than Android!! It's a lot simpler now then it was a month or so ago, just be sure to follow the rooting guide on here and you should be fine.

As for first ROM, try the one you get (1.15.405.4) after rooting the phone - do NOT, however, flash the OTA update if it comes up on your phone. The radio update will lock your phone and you'll have to buy a code to unlock it. At some point you'll have to do this anyway if you wanna use a FroYo ROM but I'd give the stock (rooted) ROM a go and see how you get on

So if you've already got an unlocked HTC Desire and you flash the radio, are you saying that you can inadvertently network lock the phone? If this is true, which radio update should you avoid?

After reading that, im nervous already! I took out orange care for £5, i know it doesn't cover bricking a phone, but i well... youknow.

I'll definitely have to read into flashing, i havent a clue what you said! Im not really into majorly changing it, i love the usual HTC/Android apps, its just all the bloatware. I'll do what you suggest though, sounds good to me!

HTC Desire (Unbranded) - Rooted Stock Rom Apps2sd+ and happy.

Thats how i want to be!

...would rooting it allow me access to uninstall built in applications? Silly question i know!
