Guest ctos Posted July 13, 2010 Report Posted July 13, 2010 I am using ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop, every time new official ROM release, I feel painful how to flash my liquid. Because official flash tools only support windows and with my experience, it not work with windows virtual machine in ubuntu (I am using virtualbox). I have to flash it in my home PC which running windows XP, but it really not convenient. I want to know whether there are any linuxer in the forum and how you did it? Any feedback is great appreciated. BTW, I will migrate to MAC month later, I also looking for a workaround to flash rom in MAC. ;-)
Guest fantong Posted July 13, 2010 Report Posted July 13, 2010 yes total agree with you damn acer how about other vender htc or moto?
Guest fantong Posted July 13, 2010 Report Posted July 13, 2010 yes total agree with you damn acer how about other vender htc or moto? and it's a joke that you can't update a linux system with a linux
Guest hv_francesco Posted July 13, 2010 Report Posted July 13, 2010 Yes, it's really a shame. I'm a linux user too and my liquid is still using donut because of this absurd acer policy, I haven't got any windows machine. Are you sure it doesn't work with latest virtualbox?

Are you sure it doesn't work with latest virtualbox? no, usb management in Virtualbox is kind of screwy, trying that could transforme you phone into a brick :)
Guest liquid_it Posted July 13, 2010 Report Posted July 13, 2010 no, usb management in Virtualbox is kind of screwy, trying that could transforme you phone into a brick :) maybe vmware will do, don't know. still, I always have to use my office pc to flash my liquid..
Guest MrVanes Posted July 13, 2010 Report Posted July 13, 2010 +1 Linux user on all home machines except 1 in the attick, guess what it's used for 99% of the time? :/ And yes, virtualbox won't work (at least last time I checked, which is a while ago).
Guest navygino Posted July 13, 2010 Report Posted July 13, 2010 ........... this is the fact anyway..... :) dual boot your machine.........
Guest Scsiborg Posted July 13, 2010 Report Posted July 13, 2010 I use linux and windows, both have their uses. I dont get why people say that im a windows user or im a linux user, its stupid. if you ahve the capability to leverage both platforms then do so and if your telling me that you cant get your head around windows but are perfectly at home in a bash shell..... i dont believe you.

Huh? What's the problem? If you use Linux - you're a Linux-user. This doesn't necessarily mean that you can't manage Windows or any other OS (it's not XOR). But did you realize that there are people out there who don't have Windows licenses? There sure are reasons to use Windows - but they are not relevant for 100% of PC-users out there... And it's really stupid to buy a license just to upgrade your smartphone OS (especially with Acer also shipping Linux-based machines...).
Guest MrVanes Posted July 13, 2010 Report Posted July 13, 2010 We all have "licenses" lying around because we buy laptops and other system that come with MS tax. I personaly don't feel bad about the "license" I use for my XP flash device... And yes, I feel more at home on the bash shell than on windows, especially the last 2 versions..

There is always someone who complains about something, go buy an iphone see how linux compatible itunes is. Fact is windows is the operating system of choice, 90 percent of all desktops utilise windows as their main operating system. Why would acer (or any other major phone manufacturer) go to the trouble of developing a linux compatible (and completely logically dissimilar) management/updater application (in python or perl or whatever) when most people don't know the first thing about linux? i'm sure that if you really wanted to you could get your hands on a windows system long enough to install a ROM on your phone. You have a preference to use ubuntu/centsos/fedora, you cant play football without a football and you cant update your phone without windows. Edited July 13, 2010 by Scsiborg

I also use Linux everywhere, haven't had a single problem with connecting, updating, installing or anything with the Liquid, except one thing, flashing the original BIN files. But I know how this happens, I worked places like this: they had these kind of old style windows programmers available at this time. Where I once worked, there was a professor working from home with a special program developed for a long time. He was very slow on programming, the company decided to bring in his software. It took something a month that the company was able to compile his software with his help, because he just used every junk he once installed or created on his computer.

I don't know, but the 10% (and still growing) market share of OS X should be enough to consider platform independent programming (shouldn't be a huge problem with adb & fastboot available for all 3 big platforms). Especially if you ship (as I said before) your own computers with Linux....And to your comparison: You're rather forced to play with a Nike ball instead of your (favorite) Adidas ball...
Guest ctos Posted July 14, 2010 Report Posted July 14, 2010 (edited) OK, guys, let's focus on the phone. It is not surprise that Acer only provide windows based flash tool, we are living in a business world and I don't know any other manufacturer provide linux-based flash tool. It is a sad story to the whole linux community. Forgive my ignorance, actually what I don't understand is why in Liquid, it is mandatory to flash the official BIN file before flash any other custom ROMs, such as LCR? As a former G1 user, I really enjoy the process of flash custom ROM, it is very simple and smooth, what I need to do is just put the zip file in SD card then flash, no PC needed at all. I want to know whether it is possible to improve this? Can we get an all-in-one file to flash and forget the PC flash tool? Edited July 14, 2010 by ctos

HTC devices can flash radio.img, but there is no such image for our devices and that is the reason for installing from bin.
Guest alfarobl Posted July 14, 2010 Report Posted July 14, 2010 (edited) Probably VMWare will work... on MacOS X I was able to flash all .bin with Acer Tool inside WMWare Fusion. Also latest 2.1 update tool worked. I think VMWare support for USB is almost perfect. Edited July 14, 2010 by alfarobl

Guest voron Posted July 15, 2010 Report Posted July 15, 2010 Try this. Start the flash on a virtual machine using acer tool, in the early flash will created folder with the unpacked files from bin rom, and then in linux console ./fastboot -i 0x0502 erase boot ./fastboot -i 0x0502 erase system ./fastboot -i 0x0502 erase userdata ./fastboot -i 0x0502 erase recovery ./fastboot -i 0x0502 flash boot boot.img ./fastboot -i 0x0502 flash system system.img ./fastboot -i 0x0502 flash userdata userdata.img ./fastboot -i 0x0502 flash recovery recovery.img ./fastboot -i 0x0502 reboot

Guest alfarobl Posted July 15, 2010 Report Posted July 15, 2010 I've tried, in my case under VMWare the system doesn't see the phone Are you using Mac OS or Linux? maybe inside Linux you have not installed the USB kernel modules or something needed to virtual USB 2.0 ports... with VMWare Fusion it detects USB devices no problem.

I'm on linux, and in virtual machine USB 2.0 works well with other periferals, but acer tool doesn't see the liquid
Guest alfarobl Posted July 15, 2010 Report Posted July 15, 2010 I'm on linux, and in virtual machine USB 2.0 works well with other periferals, but acer tool doesn't see the liquid Other meaning USB sticks? Mass storage? You should try a Serial Port device that is what Liquid device uses on USB to flash radio firmware. Maybe Linux kernel doesn't include serial port support or something similar.
Guest Vailo Posted July 15, 2010 Report Posted July 15, 2010 Have any of you tried to run the flash tool under Wine? Might work
