Guest illuzi0nz Posted July 14, 2010 Report Posted July 14, 2010 Hey guys, i bought an Orange-branded black desire couple of weeks ago from the UK that was shipped to Australia, where i am using it now. i had it unlocked prior to it being shipped to me. since then i have rooted, reflashed with paul's custom ROM and removed all that junk that was put on by Orange. i have read that by updating the radio on orange phones will cause it to sim lock. is this only the case when it is being used on the Orange UK network? since i am using a carrier that is not Orange, am i able to update my radio without it simlocking, so long as its compatible with my carrier? thanks in advance, looking forward to your help. Anthony

Anthony Hello mate, from what I can gather is, I am doing the exact same thing as you at the moment, though you're in Australia and I'm residing in the UK. Once the phone is unlocked, it's basically unlocked for good, so flashing a new radio should be fine as it won't be locked. Just remember.. When you're flashing the new radio, DO NOT TOUCH IT until it has completely finished. It'll reboot several times, and it will look like that it's switched off at some points, but it won't be, just give it the benefit of the doubt or you will brick your phone.
Guest EddyOS Posted July 14, 2010 Report Posted July 14, 2010 No, it's the phone in general so don't do it unless you wanna buy another code
Guest bigdan35 Posted July 14, 2010 Report Posted July 14, 2010 Is this because Orange do it on purpose to essentially be spiteful?
Guest illuzi0nz Posted July 14, 2010 Report Posted July 14, 2010 so according to you EddyOS, a compatible radio is essentially hardcoded into the phone? so the only way to know if a radio is compatible with a previously-orange-locked desire is to look out for warnings given in the description prior to downloading?
Guest bigdan35 Posted July 14, 2010 Report Posted July 14, 2010 What I can gather from EddyOS and another forum which I've basically asked the same question is, that yes it will be locked back to Orange, which then you will have to get another code to unlock. As new ROMs are released, every thing which the Radio communicates with, 3G, Wifi, GSM, Bluetooth, etc, need the new Radio Image to work properly, as the old one will be outdated. Sorry, I'm new to this game so I'm kinda answering my own questions too, cross fingers that's right any way! Dan
Guest EddyOS Posted July 14, 2010 Report Posted July 14, 2010 Although it shouldn't make a difference Orange may have modified the handset to only run off the radio they release their FW on. Seems a bit harsh if you ask me
Guest illuzi0nz Posted July 14, 2010 Report Posted July 14, 2010 so in that case, when 2.2 comes out, us Orange users have to wait for Orange to release their one so that we can upgrade to their working radio before reflashing a different rom to rid ourselves of the Orange junk? how troublesome.
Guest bigdan35 Posted July 14, 2010 Report Posted July 14, 2010 Hello, illuzi0nz.. I've had a gander around the forum to see if I could see if I was correct prior, and yes, I was. Have a look at http://android.modaco.com/index.php?act=an...f=430&id=12 If it's unlocked now, happy days it should be unlocked for good, and flashing a Radio shouldn't be a problem. If you got Orange to unlock the phone, then I would be weary nonetheless, but if you had someone do it from one of these websites (or an auction site) prior to it being sent to you, then you should be good to flash a new Radio straight up , sorry for the confusion. Dan
Guest EddyOS Posted July 14, 2010 Report Posted July 14, 2010 A lot of people on XDA are saying if you've used a code to unlock your Orange phone and then flash any other radio bar the one that comes with it it WILL lock your phone again and you'll need to enter the code again (assuming the same code works, I don't know) Personally I'd leave it alone and wait, but that's just me

I'm seriously considering rooting and unlocking then flashing my radio, plus a custom ROM since HTC broke my wifi when servicing my phone... (see my thread http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-desi...broke-my-wifi/) Mines an Orange branded handset too. Did you flash the radio using root+custom recovery or did you use a goldcard?
Guest illuzi0nz Posted July 21, 2010 Report Posted July 21, 2010 i just put the radio zip file onto the sd card that i normally have in there and then flashed it via adb-windows.exe. i didnt have the goldcard in when i flashed it. the order in which i had things done; unlocked the phone created goldcard + rooted reflashed it with mcr r3.1 reflashed radio
