Guest Gregory O. Posted July 14, 2010 Report Posted July 14, 2010 Hi, That's my first topic here so want say Hello to everybody  I would like to buy brand new Desire handheld (as it's my like a dream phone), I've read almost everything about it and still have a few questions: 1. Does it fully support MS Exchange 6.5 (aka 2003) ? How with Froyo? - support for attachments ? - support for calendar requests in emails ? or any calendar sync support ? appoinments (makeing and accepting) - support for contact sync ? - to-do's? - timed sync ? rules for sync e.g. do not sync on weekend ? 2. VPN - Cisco VPN concetrator, does the VPNC works ok ? with SecureRSA token ? - OpenVPN ? 3. Exchange and GoogleMail coexistance ? - how about google calendar coexistance with exchange calendar ? 4. RDP/VNC over VPN, possible ? 5. Lets assume it's deep winter and I have gloves on my hands. Is it possible to operate the phone with gloves ? (in multitouch point of view). 6. Is every Desire model rootable ? If not which submodels are not rootable ? 7. If I root it, I break warranty ? 8. Any known annoying issues ? I know the battery life is not so good. Appreciate your answers. BR, Gregory
Guest the-fallen Posted July 14, 2010 Report Posted July 14, 2010 to 5.) no, it would not work well (with thicker gloves) because it is a capacitive touchscreen that needs the electrical characteristics of a hand. It may work with thinner gloves. Or you buy a pen for that kind of displays. to 6.) for what I have read so far, yes, every Desire that is available at the moment is rootable. But you can easily compare the data in the shop before you buy it (if they have a model exposed). I think you need to check the HBOOT Version (I hope others will correct me if I am wrong) to 7.) in theory yes, because you modify something that is not meant to be modified by a user. But others here had returned their device after thay bricked it while rooting and got a new/repaired in return. So it depends on HTC if they will take the time to check whats wrong with your device once it is bricked or if they will just send you a new one (which is surely cheaper than having a technician to check/repair yours). to 8.) The small amount of free space *may* be a personal issue if you want to use a lot of apps. But that will be different once FroYo is available (or you use A2SD). The display is nearly not readable in direct sun (that is because of the kind of display. Other devices with the same kind of display have that problem, too) For the other points... I just don't know, but others will. At least I like to say that the Desire is a great phone. I can not really compare it with other phones on the marked at the moment but I surely can judge the quality. And the quality is great. The screen really does not scratch. Even not with a knive (I tried it on an edge) and the phone fell down one or two times and does not have any defects from that. I have the device in my pocked all the day, even when it is hot outside. The display does not change color (I think OLEDs won't in general), it does not get wet under the display even if you sweat a lot. The software on it just runs smooth. Browsing the Web is really nice if you have a fast connection. But if you have the chance, just take some time and try it out at the store or take the one from a friend. Some things just may be a personal issue.
Guest Gregory O. Posted July 14, 2010 Report Posted July 14, 2010 @the-fallen thanks for your answers. I'm still wondering how about MS Exchange 6.5 (2003) support. Somewhere I've found that Froyo better supports it then Android 2.1. Can anybody confirm exchange functionalities ? BR, Gregory
Guest Jez_ Posted July 14, 2010 Report Posted July 14, 2010 1. Does it fully support MS Exchange 6.5 (aka 2003) ? Attachments download fine and calendar sync seems ok / accurate too. I don't accept meetings on it (I prefer to do that on my desktop) but the option is there and looks fine. It has many options for sync times, including weekday / weekend options. It can't do HTML formatted emails though, as they show as plain text; not a show stopper though as they still read fine. 3 = Exchange and GoogleMail email and calendars seem to co-exist fine. Haven't had any issues so far. 5 = You'd be lucky to use any touch screen properly with thick gloves on! 8 = Battery life has been good for me. As long as you're not going nuts playing games etc etc or constantly syncing things then it should be fine.
Guest Gregory O. Posted July 14, 2010 Report Posted July 14, 2010 @Jez_ Thanks for Exchange exaplanation, it has big value for me. Now thinking about VPN for Cisco vpn gateways and SecureRSA. Does anybody can say something about it or has some experiance especially running Vpnc and SecureRSA token authentication ? BR, Gregory
