Dont know where to start - Plz help

Hi! I bought htc desire a few weeks back which is rooted. Problem is, it does not install device software updates. I am not happy with it's battery backup either. So how can i get the latest updates over the air or i would like to know how to update it in any possible way. I have read Paul's post about unofficial version of Froyo ROM.

ATM its running firmware 2.1 update1, build 1.15.405.4
