Guest PaulW21781 Posted July 14, 2010 Report Posted July 14, 2010 Just a quick question... Those who have rooted/flashed alternative ROM's and who are on Orange... How many of you have issues connecting to "3G" data services, ie, using browser or something while the connection icon says 3G, and then when displaying H or G, data works fine?? Just want to try something if you fancy being a guinea pig

Guest PaulW21781 Posted July 14, 2010 Report Posted July 14, 2010 (edited) Ok... Can you add the following lines to your /system/build.prop file?? Quick instructional... Use fakeflash Boot into recovery/fakeflash Go to partitions menu > mount /system adb pull /system/build.prop build.prop MAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR BUILD.PROP FILE JUST INCASE IT DOESN'T WORK OR SOMETHING GOES WRONG DURING YOUR EDITS!! Edit said build.prop file... In the file, search for all entries starting with ro.ril and delete them, DONT delete the line rild.libpath Now paste in the following at the top (or there abouts) rild.libpath=/system/lib/libhtc_ril.so ro.ril.enable.a52=0 ro.ril.enable.a53=1 ro.ril.hsdpa.category=8 ro.ril.hsupa.category=5 ro.ril.hsxpa=2 ro.ril.def.agps.mode=1 ro.ril.disable.mcc.filter=1 ro.ril.disable.fd.plmn.prefix=23402,23410,23411 ro.ril.enable.sdr=0 ro.ril.enable.dtm=1 ro.ril.gprsclass=12 ro.ril.hsdpa.category=8 ro.ril.hsupa.category=5 ro.ril.hsxpa=2 ro.ril.def.agps.mode=2 ro.ril.disable.power.collapse=1 ro.ril.enable.prl.recognition=1 ro.ril.oem.nosim.ecclist=911,112,999,000,08,118,120,122,110,119,995 ro.ril.oem.ecclist=911,112,999,000,08,118,120,122,110,119,995 # Commented out the following as I need to test these still... #ro.ril.emc.mode=2 #ro.ril.enable.managed.roaming=1 #ro.ril.avoid.pdp.overlap=1 Save the build.prop file adb push build.prop /system/build.prop adb shell (then in the adb shell) chmod 644 /system/build.prop Reboot and check... Guest PaulW21781 Posted July 14, 2010 Report Posted July 14, 2010 ps I have no idea how the above "modification" will affect data use on other networks, so I'd strongly advise against building it into any build.prop files for generic ROM's...

I'll spend a day observing it then give your modification a shot and see how I got on. :-)
Guest neilshoemark Posted July 14, 2010 Report Posted July 14, 2010 Ok, getting late a minute, I'll try this mod out in the morning and report straight back to you, if this works I will call you God
Guest PaulW21781 Posted July 14, 2010 Report Posted July 14, 2010 Just remember to make a backup of your build.prop before you edit it!!!! Just incase
Guest neilshoemark Posted July 15, 2010 Report Posted July 15, 2010 Just remember to make a backup of your build.prop before you edit it!!!! Just incase  I can't find any difference, 3G still doesn't work for me well, I just find it switches over to H a lot quicker in a HSDPA area

I know it's not the same phone but it might be to do with Orange's Service, when I was living in North Staffordshire, I could NEVER connect to 3G whatsoever, but the moment my phone was on HSDPA, or GSM, happy days. Just check with Orange to see whether anything is wrong in that area, probs to do with the Desire, but still! They'll give you awful lies too, just to try and fob you off but be persistent with them

I've been testing it today, it seems to be working here, but I need to get into town and try it there where it only gives 3G and no H...
Guest franciswills Posted July 15, 2010 Report Posted July 15, 2010 I'll give it a go later, but it's worth checking with a friend that's also on Orange on a different phone whether they get 3G service for comparison. My 3G reception in central London is appalling, but then so are my friends on Orange with iPhones/Nokias. I've spoken to Orange a bunch of times and even they will admit that their capacity in this area is terrible. Any more info on what your mods are actually doing?
Guest PaulW21781 Posted July 15, 2010 Report Posted July 15, 2010 (edited) Any more info on what your mods are actually doing? The ro.ril options aren't very well documented to be fair... But from reading up on what is mentioned on googles docs, it does have some pretty interesting effects of how the radio on the phone actually works. I've been looking at the build.prop from all "stock" ROM bases (even got the build.prop extracted from a friends phone who's is Orange branded) aswell as the French one available on here, and comparing those to others (O2, Tmob, Virgin, WWE), this is how the configs differ, so tried it on mine and at first glance it does seem to be working, so thought I'd put it out into the open and see if it helps other people too. Either way, if it works then yay! If it doesn't, then its an easy enough job for rooted users to undo the changes without any resets/wipes/etc etc... as any change to build.prop is only as permanent as the file remains changed  Edited July 15, 2010 by PaulW21781
Guest me227 Posted July 15, 2010 Report Posted July 15, 2010 I can't say i've noticed any problems. Had a weak 3G signal and I'd get a connection error sometimes on the facebook app, I just assumed it was due to the weak signal. Might have to test this out.
Guest CaspaTheGhost Posted July 15, 2010 Report Posted July 15, 2010 Very interested to know if this works! Know the exact issue you are talking about and as I work in central London I experience it a lot (along with what I would call associated network issues - like losing data totally, being unable to make calls - especially when experiencing the 3G issue, and incoming calls going straight to voicemail) Running the generic ROM but know people have the same issue on stock one, if this works then it will be the thing that pushes me to root! Froyo has nearly got me to, but not enough to make me actually find/make the time to do it!
Guest gromain Posted July 16, 2010 Report Posted July 16, 2010 (edited) Hey! Thanks for the tips! For the french users, I would really suggest to add these numbers to the ro.ril.oem.nosim.ecclist and ro.ril.oem.ecclist : 15,17,18,112. It seems that these entries are for allowed emergency numbers in case no sim is present. The lines should now look like these: ro.ril.oem.nosim.ecclist=911,112,999,000,08,118,120,122,110,119,995,15,17,18,112 ro.ril.oem.ecclist=911,112,999,000,08,118,120,122,110,119,995,15,17,18,112 And by the way, I'm testing the changes right now! Guest Dr_Ash Posted July 28, 2010 Report Posted July 28, 2010 unfortunately this seemed to make no difference for me.....
Guest JulesB Posted July 29, 2010 Report Posted July 29, 2010 I would agree with others that the problem appears to be with the capacity of the Orange 3G network rather than a problem with the phone. I don't usually have too much problems with 3G signals out of the main population areas, but around London, and particularly the mainline stations, it is terrible. It is very frustrating trying to do anything on 3G around Euston, but once the train is a few miles north of the station, the 3G performance usually improves.
Guest smumford Posted July 29, 2010 Report Posted July 29, 2010 I sometimes have this problem, but I think it was the same when I had the stock orange ROM installed. Think it is probably the network!
