On my home pc I set my Streak to default to the first usb connection (MTP - transfer media files). I have subsequently discovered that I actually want to use the 'other' option (have read that file transfer is much quicker) and, while I hope to be able to change this at home, I am unable to do so on my work pc. This being the case I simply want to to reset my Streak to offer me the options screen again but I can't for the life of me find out where or how to.

I should add that I'm assuming that because my work pc runs vista business which has no media player and therefore can't/won't install the MPT drivers that the other route may be my salvation.

Does any of that make sense?

does the usb connection icon appear in the notification bar? if i set it to charging only and tick always perform this action, i can still change it by tapping the notification bar, tapping usb connected to open that page up so i can pick the middle one - non mtp to copy files over.

is this what you meant?

Yes, exactly what I mean - however, possibly because I selected the MTP default previously, tapping the icon only gives me the option to turn off usb storage (and thus disconnecting the device). I suspect this is because it can't install the drivers on the pc because it is specifically looking for MTP drivers which will never happen as Vista business doesn't support it - Catch 22.

So what I'm really after is a way to get back to the connection selection screen on the dell to change the default without first being connected to a pc...

hmm just a hunch but im wondering if the pc suite needs to be installed for the drivers, i had to for windows 7 64bit to install the drivers until then it failed on me too.

Turning of USB storage does not disconnect the device; it just disconnects the SD card from the PC (and returns it to the device).

pc suite is installed, just without appropriate device drivers. The device isn't charging or appearing as connected on the pc while it searches and fails to install MPT driver...(round and round I go...)

I never had this with Win7 - it recognised the device and downloaded+installed the software directly from the device...

some usb drivers were posted in this section about a problem with the pc suite install. again me clutching at straws...lol

sorry im not much wiser with this, i know how stupid vista can be. its reminding me of those driver failures you get with that driver signature option turned on as default. using and f8 to disable that had me get over devices working in that past. it reset this when rebooting but this could be worked around just cant recall off my head.

I haven't installed ANY drivers on my Win 7 X64 machine (s) and it works perfectly.

I select mtp when i want to copy tunes to it or select just charging otherwise.

if you click on the usb notification in the drop down you can switch connection modes.

Works like a charm for me

Likewise. I don't use the PC suite, just the file transfer. I originally chose MTP but got annoyed at being prompted to convert everything. I'm also on Win7 x64, but have also used my Ubuntu 8.04 netbook to transfer files without issue as well.

Is the PC suite more for synching emails and what not?

@loconinja - that sounds a more technically convincing explanation than my clumsy effort, however, in this case switching off usb storage ends the session with the pc. Since the pc simply shows it as disconnected anyway it makes no difference other than removing the usb icon from the notification area on the device.

@yosemite-sam - thanks for all your input - I'll look into the those drivers and report back. Looks like a typical Vista thing, although I've kinda reconciled myself with that, I'm more annoyed that I am unable to get back the usb selection screen solely via the device now.

@h9k - thanks for sharing.

@maskaler - Yes but I don't really need pc suite as such, I'm now just trying a.) to get the usb selection screen on the dell and b.) to get Vista to install any working driver so I can transfer files. (I'm not using vista by choice, I hasten to add!)

Thought I'd update this thread with a resolution: The problem, as I suspected, was entirely down to the unit being locked to the MTP method which was preventing Vista business from recognising the device correctly and installing the MTP drivers (which, without any inbuilt media player, Vista business would never be able to do).

Once I was home and connected to my Win7 pc, I was finally presented with the usb connections option screen (on the Streak). I think this actually may also have been possible via the applications settings on the Streak but I sure as hell coouldn't find it when I needed to.

Now I'm back using Vista business, without any defaults set, I plugged in my Streak, was presented with the connection choices, selected standard file transfer and all is well with the world again.

I can see no reason why I would ever need to use MTP in this lifetime when I can simply drag and drop...

Yet another Vista fail...
