Dell Streak losses network connections following a K-9 alert

Hi All,

My Dell Streak losses network connections following a K-9 alert.

I think this may be just an android problem and not specific to the streak but I have observed that in about 70% of the observations, this problem occurs when accessing another application while not on the wifi. I have a notifcation saying something like "k9 alert - syncing and sending suspended due to..."

Unfortunately when I click on the notification and it disappears so i'm not sure of the rest of it. It appeared to have turned off all my network connections. The device restores the connections back in a few seconds by itself.

Any idea what might be causing this? or should I return back the device to O2!!!! :-(

Cheers....

Mine does this in certain areas as well (not my flat though...) and the k9 alert happens after data is lost. The alert is basically telling you that data is lost. This has been a problem that alot of people are having with no solution yet.

This is known as loss of signal lol. You'll find that every phone known to man will do this in certain areas  If the phone can't get data from either your wifi or whatever gprs service... then it'll flag it.

I find the k9 alert annoying though. But it still isn't worse than the iphone's HUGE box popping up in the middle of your screen. Absolutely infuriating if you were playing a game or something.

Agree... but one observation was when it occured while I was typing in a text. The text won't leave my phone until after the connections were restored and O2-UK appeared again on the phone. I think it's just not data.

Can a K-9 alert disable all network & data connections from the device?

No... you're still not getting it. The alert doesn't disable anything. It simply tells you that nothing is able to get through. Texts and calls are still data. They require the same signal.

When signal returns, you can send. Wifi and data is very very temperamental. A butterflies sneeze or a baby's fart can send the signals awry.

Totally agree, this alert is so annoying. Is there any chance to disable these annoying alerts?

That's why I wanted a selfcooked ROM without K9 Mail (but because of acore errors this is impossible to use).

The k9 alert isnt from the k9 mail app.

I find it very strange that the Mail App seems to be connected all the time (why else this error everytime there's no data connection).

I have a second mail account I use with the Mail App. It should never search for new mails, I do it manually (settings: "never"), the Alert comes anyway also it shouldn't even be connected.

It's probably just listening to the telephony status.

You say this as if the two are comparable! My daughter literally vibrates whatever she is sitting on when she passes wind, not to mention the noise. Baby's farts definitely aren't gentle or quiet :D

I've definitely found pockets of uselessness around my home town (Brighton) for the Streak. Beach = lots of service drops, my work desk not so much. My home is fine, my mum's is not. Very odd. It does seem to happen with the 3G icon is showing and it tries to step up to HSDPA, barfs and then shows the K9 notification.

Agree with ur comment on the 3G turning to HSDPA quite a fe times hen this happens. Never seen it when connected to a Wifi.... Very Odd, but true.... today I even experienced it as I as making a call... and guess what the message was ------ "No Network Service"

blame to O2 I guess... I was reading somewhere abouts holes in the O2 HSDPA network... Is that the cause?

On another lines, does anyone know if iPhone 3gs/ 4g also use hsdpa, it ill be interesting to hear if they notice such drops....

K9 is a police unit . its likely a bug that triggers a handle so that the device thinks a K9 police unit has been dispatched on you , so the unit abandons you leaving you without any possible help requests and navigation out of the situation , thus making you a sitting duck for the police state's forces .... sorry , big brother is watching :(

Yeah they both do and they do drop, but on my iphone 3gs it wasn't as often.

I had that lost connection problem not that much, but a few times.

I had to hardreset the Dell and decided not to use K9 Mail for my Hotmail account.

And since then I haven't lost any connection anymore (besides areas with no reception itself, where every phone loses connection). So maybe K9 Mail is the problem of it all.

Using the unlocked Dell with Vodafone in GER.

I get this also on my streak. My SE X1 did this too.

It always happened when the phone switches between data connection modes. ie between HSPA/3g/GPRS.

I'm in cornwall and signal is very patchy so changes often in town. In the area I work I only get GPRS and never get alert cos its not switching

Only difference is my streak gives a K9 alert where as my X1 didn't

I don't think it is a fault at all.

I suppose it's quite possible that the Streak is merely showing it happening quicker than other devices. It comes back pretty quickly - my iPhone 3G never did it, however if the signal check were every 5 seconds instead of every 1 second it's plausible the phone could have missed it happening, or that it doesn't really matter.

I've started phone calls on my Streak, "lost service", and still been connected. It's never dropped mid-call, either.

No its not a simple loss of signal, the K9 error is induced by an email program called touchdown. This program needs to be disabled & the K9 error will stop occurring & subsequently causing the disconnection from the network.

If you dont own a streak, then you dont know what the problem is, & it is a problem.

Yes I believe the K9 error is related to touchdown, do you know how to disable toucdown other than to do a hard reset?

Next question, how do you do a hard reset on the streak?

Thanks

Noticed Touchdown was always using way too much CPU time.

So just:

adb shell

su

mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mtdblock6 /system

rm /system/app/Touchdown.apk

and it's gone for good.

This is wrong. The K9 alert is caused by the built in Email client. You can easily replicate this issue. Disable your cell data connection. Turn on wifi and connect to a wireless network. Verify you have network connectivity. Then turn off your wifi. You will immediately see that alert.

The alert is the email app saying it cannot background sync your email. If you have no email accounts setup, you won't get the alert. If you don't have them set to background sync, you won't get the alert. If you have upgraded to 2.1, you won't get the alert.

The alert doesn't cause your network connections to go down, it is caused by your network connections going down. Did anyone think through the logic in that reasoning? If the network down alert causes your network connection to go down, then what causes the alert in the first place? That would be some circular reasoning. . .

I constantly had this error with stock German 1.6 ROM on O2-DE and contrary to the other posts my 3G data took ages to turn on - if at all. Often I had to switch the phone off and after rebooting data worked again until it didn't anymore. Now I selected the O2 network in settings instead of automatic and I don't see this error anymore. I suppose though that will bite me in my derriere if and when I am abroad and the phone won't switch to other networks.

Edit: After every reboot the network selection is back to automatic and has to be manually set to your carrier.

Cheers. I used to have the same problem until today when i tried something different. I deleted the e-mail account and only kept the googlemail one. After that i disabled al sync options so nothing passes through sync. The only thing that i left untouched was the backround data. That stayed enabled. At the moment this works for me. I'll post if something happens (hope it doesn't).Cheers all
